“Any idea who?” he asked, rising from the seat he’d taken.

“I might,” I said, stepping in. I held up my phone like a flag. “My dad just called. He said he overheard Pris talking about how she was meeting with someone to get the second half of the money tonight.”

“She’s meeting up with this person tonight?” Hawk asked.

“Yeah.”

His eyes were the crystal blue of water beneath ice, but they were the opposite of cold. They were filled with strong purpose and a flicker of emotion I couldn’t name.

“I’m going to have Noah get in on this.” He tapped out what I assumed was a text to his private investigator.

We all lingered a moment as Hawk examined his phone. Then he pocketed it.

“Sounds like he’s already following her. She’s headed to the warehouse sector in old downtown.”

My pulse sputtered. What was Pris up to? Was this man going with her this time?

It made me wonder about him that much more. How much did Derek know about this? Did he know this person was paying Pris to target me? She hadn’t been speaking with him—it’d been with someone else. Who?

I couldn’t imagine Derek would be in on this. He and I had cared about each other once, and I thought we were still friends.

Would he really stoop this low just to get a few bucks? Maybe he didn’t know the gist of whatever deal Pris had struck.

“We’re coming,” Maddox said.

Duncan nodded. “We got your back.”

I could think whatever I wanted of him, of both of them, but there was one thing in their favors at least—they were loyal. And that was admirable.

My resolve settled in as well. Hawk was under fire and taking it head-on—for me.

I’d dreamed of finding a man I could rely on, a man who put others first, who would stand by me at the first sign of trouble. I’d never believed a man like that existed, but he did.

Hawk was all of those things and more.

I would stand by him in this.

Hawk looked taken aback. “You guys?—”

“Me, too,” I said, joining his side. “I want to be with you. I want to be there when you catch whoever this person is.”

The muscles along his jaw and throat shifted as he swallowed. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea.”

“I’m not sitting by. She’s sabotaging me, and I’m going to be there.”

Hawk measured my words. “Okay, then. I’ll have the police on hand, too, just in case things go south.”

“How could they?” I asked.

What danger did he anticipate?

“Will pulled a knife on Bria,” Hawk explained. “If he’s broken out of jail and has money on the line for this, I wouldn’t put anything past him. People are jacked when it comes to bargaining for money.”

“We shouldn’t go unarmed,” Duncan said, crossing his arms over his chest.

Maddox nodded in agreement. “You got a gun?” he asked.

Guns. Whoa. The word spread chills down the backs of my arms.
