Hawk captured my gaze and pressed another kiss to my mouth. “You ready for this?”

“Ready.”

We were going to catch this person. Together.

I just hoped Hawk was the only one who came with a gun.

THIRTY-SEVEN

The gun weighed heavilyon my hip as I stalked to the passenger side of my Jaguar to open the door for Ella.

Maddox and Duncan climbed into the backseat, and once we were all situated, I cruised down the highway. The warehouses were on the other side of town.

“Noah said she was just leaving her mom’s house,” I said, explaining as I drove.

I gripped the steering wheel with both hands and took the turns faster than I probably should have. My blood was hyper, as though I’d just ingested ten energy drinks.

“Which means she’ll get there about the same time we do,” Duncan said from behind me.

“Unless she makes a few stops along the way,” Ella added.

She chewed her lip, looking nervous.

I switched hands on the wheel and rested my hand onher knee. The sun was setting, the sky darkening to muted hues of purple and blue.

“She won’t have anywhere else to go,” I told her, hoping to reassure her. “Not when ten grand is on the line.”

“Ten grand? That’s how much this person will be giving her?”

“Your dad said she was going to get the second half, right?” I said. “I’m just assuming it’s that much, since that’s how much Noah thinks she got the first time.”

“Who do you think it is?” Maddox asked from the backseat.

“Your mom,” Duncan muttered.

“Could be the last girl Hawk dated,” Maddox said, ignoring Duncan’s juvenile jab. “What was her name? Amelia something. Or another ex. You got any other exes, Ella?”

“Vindictive enough to pay twenty grand to see you go down?” Duncan prodded.

Duncan wasn’t as big of a chum on first acquaintance, not like Maddox or Adrian. He was a quiet soul but would do anything for anyone, and I was glad to hear him opening up more as the night went on.

I was glad to have both of the guys along for this.

The truth was, they had stock in this mess too, just like Adrian and I did. Now that Adrian had dissolved his contract, he didn’t have anything to worry about.

But the rest of us?

“Are you kidding?” Ella said. “I’m worth way more than that.”

I sniggered at this, casting her a bemused glance. She was beautiful, a siren in the passenger seat, and if I wasn’t careful, I’d land us in a heap on the roadside.

All joking aside, my body trembled under that particular prospect.

I wouldn’t let anything happen to her. Not now. Not ever.

The glittering lights of a Ferris wheel, of rapid roller coasters and towers with top hats and rabbit’s ears came into view. The sight instilled a thrill in my chest every time I saw it. The flashiness and promise of such fast-paced fun was enticing, to say the least.
