“What’s the opposite of purple?” I said, unable to help giving him a hard time. Seeing him like this, behind glass and wearing the yellow jumpsuit, I couldn’t help it.

The old me came roaring out. On the color spectrum, yellow was literally directly across from purple.

Will’s eyes narrowed. Though he’d been hunched over, he straightened and rested his hands on his knees.

“Very funny. If you came here to give me crap, I’m going back to my cell.” His eyes were downtrodden, his forehead long, his expression dejected.

“I already hate myself enough as it is,” he added. “I don’t need you fools here to rub in how much better your lives are than mine.”

“That’s not why we’re here,” I said.

A small amount of regret slid into place between my ribs. Very small.

“We came to ask you a few questions, if you’re open to that,” Maddox said.

Will folded his arms. “What’ve you got then? The food is okay. They give us time for recreation and service. I have my own bunk and toilet. The other guys are douches. What more do you want to know?”

“I met a girl,” I began.

Will scowled. “Sure. Rub that in, too.”

I cleared my throat and went on. “She’s amazing. I think I might marry her one day.”

“Good for you.”

Had he always been this big of an idiot? Though I wanted to lash out at him or make another insulting remark, I held my tongue and stuck to the matter at hand.

“Recently, her stepsister collaborated with someone and tried to frame her for a crime she didn’t commit. They puther life in danger.”

“I’m sorry to hear it. I still don’t see what that has to do with me.”

“They referenced The Pact while doing it,” Maddox said.

Behind him, Duncan nodded.

Will’s eyes narrowed. His gaze tripped from one of us to the next and then back to me again.

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Because we tried to catch the person her stepsister was meeting with, but he got away. We wondered?—”

My voice wavered. I pushed on.

“I wondered if you might know who it was.”

“Why me?”

Seriously? He was behind bars. He had all those fancy amenities he’d outlined to us moments ago.

Did I really have to spell it out for him?

“You attacked Bria and Gabby,” Duncan said, doing the dirty work for me.

He was good at dirty work. That much was evidenced by how swiftly he’d been able to disarm the shadowed man the other night.

Will released a mirthless laugh. “So naturally, you think I was the one she was meeting with? How could I have? They have me locked up tight.”

“We wanted to know if you knew anything about who it could be,” Maddox said.
