“Throw yourself at me anytime,” I said.

Preferably with the lights dimmed next time.

She let out a nervous chuckle and righted herself.

Reluctantly, I released my hold on her.

“What happened?” she asked. “Did you rig the elevator to trap me in here?”

“Yes,” I said with sarcasm. “I’ve been stalking your every move and waiting for the right moment to get you alone.”

A light appeared from her direction. She held her phone up, bent near the buttons indicating the floors, and used the flashlight to find the intercom button.

Pushing it in, she waited.

For some reason, her focus on the buttons made me aware of our surroundings. My pulse began to escalate. Elevators were bad enough in the short time it took to get from one floor to another. Having one halt during its descent?

I’d always had problems with tight spaces. Being on my plane was fine because I could look out the window, eat snacks, and find cool air flow.

But here? Now?

Ridiculous as it was, my temperature rose, and unease began to overtake me.

Not now,I told my nerves.

I’d wanted her to know more about me, sure, butdisplayingmy claustrophobia was less preferable to just telling her about it.

Elevator assistance wasn’t responding.

“Hang on,” I said, pulling my phone out, my temples pulsing.

Fortunately, service wasn’t unreachable. My assistant’s name was at the top of my recent calls list. I tapped it and held the phone to my ear, quivering, waiting.

“Hello?” she answered.

“Clary, yeah.” My throat was clogged. Icleared it, hoping Ella didn’t notice my discomfort. “It’s Hawk. The south elevator is stuck.”

“With you on it?”

“Yes.”

Ella’s gaze was tangible. It thickened my throat.

I tugged on my collar.

My head felt light. My lungs pumped faster. My heart banged against my sternum.

This couldn’t be happening, not now. Not with her. The last time I’d freaked out like this had been during a flight to Louisiana to meet with suppliers, but I had resources on my plane to calm me down.

All I had here was her. I wanted to make a good impression, not push her away even more. Would she care that I couldn’t handle tight spaces?

Ella was on her phone, apologizing softly to someone on the other end for needing to postpone something. I should probably call Faye and do the same, but I would do what I could to get us out of this mess first.

“Yes,” I repeated to Clary. “A woman and I are both trapped here. Can you please call maintenance and have them on this? Immediately?”
