“I’m sure.”

“That sounds amazing!”

I winced. So much for my insistence on loving road trips.

The truth was, a quick flight sounded way better than being stuck behind the wheel for days. My backside was getting tired just thinking about it.

“So…You want to?” I asked.

“Sure, why not?”

“It means we won’t leave for a few more days.”

She smiled and shrugged. “Works for me.”

She plunked onto my couch and stared at the window that had captivated my attention moments before. Her expression still held a distant satisfaction.

“This is perfect,” she went on pensively. “Suzie and I were trying to come up with ways to cover our bills this month, and this will help more than you know. Good thing Gabby’s marrying a rich guy.” She giggled.

“Okay, then. We’re on board with this?”

The time to back out was now. She was my saving grace. If she agreed, that was it.

“Yep!”

Ugh. She agreed far too readily.

I worked up a smile. I mean, I tried. The corners of my mouth wouldn’t respond, though.

A jittery, fluttering sensationdeveloped in my stomach. It spread into my chest and tingled down to my fingers as I held my phone and attempted to work up the courage to call Gabby back.

I’d do it. I’d tap her number. I’d tell her we were changing our plans.

Addie and I would fly to Montana with my gorgeous, off-limits boss. Mr. Danielson and I would have no chemistry beyond that of friends, and then I could show Gabby there was absolutely no chance any kind of romance was going to spark between us.

Because there wasn’t.

I’d make sure of that.

TWO

This was a long flight. And I liked to avoid those. It was why I had a private jet.

In all reality, it only took a few hours to get from Vermont to Montana, but with these two additional passengers along this time?

We’re talking eons.

I drummed my fingers on the end of the arm rest and diverted my gaze from the fluffy cluster of cottony clouds out the jet’s rounded windows toward the two women currently sitting in the beige leather seats across from me.

Adrian had told me Ella and Adelie were pretty, so I’d prepared myself for that. He’d also told me Ella and I would make a great pair, and the more I looked at her, the more I was sure he was right.

Her head was bent as she looked toward the tote bag settled at her hip in the wide, cushy seat. She had the longest lashes, a pert nose, and the prettiest curve toher mouth. Her shoulder-length brown hair had strands of red every time the sun caught it. And she seemed about as interested in me as a person was in amputation.

Something stirred in my chest. The air agitated with a charge that laced my lungs with every breath, and the jet’s cabin, the coffee table between us, and the TV screen at her back both fogged and lightened around her.

We’d boarded and had been in the air for at least an hour, and her reaction to me hadn’t changed.
