She’d seemed interested when I’d said it. She’d seemed like she was fighting herself, which meant she wanted it, too.

“What’s up?” Adrian said, answering the call.

“Dude, this might sound weird, but I need to talk to your wife.”

“Is everything okay?”

“I just wanted to ask?—”

“Hang on,” Adrian said. “Gabby’s right here. I’ll put you on speaker.” Seconds ticked past, and then Gabby’s sweet voice pealed.

“Hey, Hawk,” she said. “What’s up?”

“I like Ella,” I told her.

She giggled. “I could tell.”

“I talked to her today—and I think she works for me.”

The pause on the other end was too long for my liking. “She wouldn’t want me saying anything,” Gabby finally said, sounding apologetic.

“We tried setting you two up before,” Adrian added, “and she was really hesitant.”

“I get that,” I said, “but I also got different vibes from her today. I saw her. We talked. We…it was awesome. I invited her to my company Christmas ball?—”

Gabby released an excited noise on the other end of the line.

“—but I didn’t do it in person like I should have. She’s been emailed along with the rest of my staff. I just—I’d like to know where she works because I can’t find her on anyof our records.”

“That’s because she doesn’t technically work for you,” Adrian said.

Gabby shushed him. A small argument broke out between the two of them, and it sounded like Adrian said, “What? He’ll find out anyway. It’s not like it’s a secret.”

“Just tell me,” I said. “Please. Put me out of my misery. She’ll forgive you.”

Gabby sighed. “She works for her stepmother Stina Malus.”

This threw me. The woman who oversaw the custodial company?

I hadn’t had much interaction with Stina other than the messages we’d shared over the recent theft. A sinking took place in my gut.

Ethan, my head of security, suspected the thief was among the custodial staff. Was that why Ella was keeping herself so distant from me?

I shook the thought away almost the instant it surfaced. She wouldn’t do anything like that—even though she had jokingly said her family would suspect her of robbery if she were ever imprisoned.

“Thanks for telling me,” I said. “You two are coming to the ball, aren’t you?”

“We’d like to,” Adrian said. “But…”

“Don’t tell me your company is being attacked again.”

I’d waited for something else to happen after the mysterious little cards the bros and I had all gotten at his wedding, but so far, nothing else had happened.

Will was back in jail. No one else at the frat was thatpsycho.

“No,” he said.

“Your family’s okay?”
