He hadn’t.

I muttered something that sounded like, “Mm-hm-sounds-good.”

I was detached. I was floating. I was a flipping hot air balloon.

“You going to work or what?” he said, his eyes laughing.

He jutted his chin in the direction I’d been heading.

“I—yes.” Heat flooded my face.

“Guess you’d better get going. I’m headed back to bed.” After holding my gaze a few moments longer, he turned on his heel and strutted in the direction we’d come in.

Was this real? Hawk Danielson had just asked me to be his date at his Christmas ball—and I’d agreed? How had he even known where to find me?

The fact that my backside was still sore and the sight of his smile had brandished itself into my mind affirmed as much?—

—as well as the sight of Pris’s armored stance as I turned the corner.

“What was that about?” she asked.

I froze. Every hazy, disoriented thought that had been vaulting in all directions suddenly clattered back to earth.

My defenses went on alert as they always did around her.

“What was what?”

“Who was that?” She sneered. “Someone asked you out?”

This was the last thing I needed.

“You heard that?”

“It sounded like it was Mr. Danielson.”

“How do you know what he sounds like?”

I wasn’t sure she’d ever spoken directly with him before. I wouldn’t have, either, not if it hadn’t been for Gabby and Adrian’s interference.

My stomach gave a little flicker again.

She rolled her eyes. “Just tell me. Was it him? Why would he ask you out?”

“What do you care?”

“He’s the owner of the company,” she said, as though her reservations were obvious.

“So?” I continued toward the office. I needed to clock in—I was already late as it was.

No need to let Pris make things worse.

I couldn’t let her know how ecstatic about this I was. She would sabotage everything. She would use my feelings as fodder to take me down in whatever nasty little ways she could think of.

“There’s no way the owner of Ever After Sweets is interested inyou.”

She’d laid the bait, but I wasn’t rising to it. I continued walking toward the office.

Leave it to Pris to ruin a moment as amazing as this. Hawk had not only asked me to be his dateat the ball—but he’d come at an unearthly hour to meet me so he could ask me in person.
