Was this real? Was this happening?

“How about I pick you up around six? We can hit the town and go to the ball from there?”

It took several moments for me to realize my mouth was gaping open. I gazed at the floor, lost in a daze. “Perfect,” Isaid. “Hawk?”

“Hm?”

“I’m excited.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.” Heat radiated through my chest. My hands tingled. Heck, myentire bodytingled.

“Me, too,” he said. “I’m glad you finally gave in.”

“Oh?”

“We both know you’ve been crazy about me since we met.”

I could no longer sit still. I rose to my feet and clutched the phone, needing the movement.

“I think that’s the other way around,” I said, grinning like a fool.

“I think you might be right. I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”

“Okay.”

The call ended, leaving me weightless and crammed with anticipation all at once.

For so long, the future had been hazy, a distant unknown that I tended to brace myself for rather than look forward to.

But now?

Just for one night, it glittered.

My phone buzzed in my hand, shaking me from the weaving taking place in my bloodstream.

For a minute, I hoped it might be Hawk again, but Grammy Carroll’s face filled the screen.

I tapped the speaker button and sank back into the chair by my sewing machine.

“Hey, Grammy.”

“How’s my favorite granddaughter?” Grammy Carroll’s voice chimed through, elderly and chipper.

I smiled.

“You say that to whichever granddaughter you’re talking to. What’s up?”

“I wanted to talk about Christmas morning. Why don’t you stay the night at my place tomorrow? Adelie and Suzie and a few of the GGs will be there, too. It’ll be a great chance for you girls to catch up.”

I waited for the pinprick of hurt at the reminder of the fallout between me and my family, but it didn’t come. If anything, I sat up a little straighter.

I’d accepted the role of victim for far too long. But after my conversation with Stina? I felt so liberated.

I no longer let her have power over me. That was huge.

It was so awesome of Grammy to think of me. I hadn’t spoken to Adelie since we’d gotten back from the wedding—and there was definitelya lotto tell her.
