“Yes.”

“Then let’s make you look like royalty.”

She worked while Grammy, Addie, and I chatted.

“Those pillows you sewed are all miracles,” Grammy said as a segue from her previous statement.

“Those kids won’t ever know how hard you worked on those, but the pillowcases are miracles. Made with love. Miracles don’t have to come at random. Sometimes, they’re on purpose, and if you ask me, those are the best kind.”

“You guys didn’t have to come here just for me tonight,” I said.

“Yes, we did,” Addie said. “You do so much for others. And your dad and stepmom not inviting you home? Talk about pathetic.”

“All you girls are growing up,” Grammy said. “It’s hard to believe sometimes. Suzie’s got a good one with that Fletcher boy she’s dating. Ella’s got a good one.”

“We just need Adelie to find a man now,” I said. “Someone who gives her the red-carpettreatment, too.”

Addie embodied the term bashful. Her chin dipped. Her cheeks pinked. “I’m not looking for one.”

“But you want one,” I said.

She didn’t deny it.

I knew it must be hard for her. She and Suzie lived in their other grandparents’ house. They’d bought the place after their grandparents had passed away, and Suzie’s boyfriend, Fletcher, was around all the time.

I knew Addie got along great with him, but I also knew she did, in fact, want a boyfriend of her own. She wanted the husband, the dream of being loved.

“There,” Missy said, lowering her curling iron. “What do you think?”

I’d been so busy talking, I hadn’t paid much attention to what she was up to.

My hair was decadent and gorgeous. It was piled in delicate barrel curls on the back of my head while tresses draped down the side of my neck.

Considering the fact that I mostly pulled my tresses in a ponytail, this was extravagant. More stunning than anything I could have done for myself.

“I love it,” I said, meaning every word.

I couldn’t stop staring, which I knew sounded vain, but what else was I supposed to do with a look like this? I’d never seen myself like this before.

“Beautiful,” Grammy agreed. “You work your magic as always.”

Missy shrugged off the praise. She placed a hand on my shoulder. I reached up and clasped it, gripping it a few times.

“Merry Christmas, Missy.”

“You’re telling me,” she said, turning away to return her flat iron to its designated place and flicking its switch to off. “For as much as that man of yours offered me, this will be my family’s best Christmas ever!”

We all laughed.

“How much did he offer you?” I asked, curious. I’d mentioned Missy to Hawk once. Did he remember?

“I’m not going to jinx it,” she said, unclipping the cape and removing it from my lap.

I rose to my feet. Grammy and Addie did the same. Grammy looked me over, eyes twinkling. “You look like a star. Let’s go pick out your dress.”

“Don’t tell me,” I said, reaching for my coat. “He bribed the owner to open the doors just for this, too.”

“Just for you,” Addie said radiantly. “You’ll get your own personal shopping spree and can probably pick any dress you want.”
