His sweats bagged around my shorter legs but were comfortable and warm. The T-shirt had an American flag on it, and it hung to my thighs. I didn’t mind, if he didn’t.

I placed my dress beside my silver heels on the floor and checked my hair and makeup in the mirror. My tears had washed off most of it, but my eyes were shining, my skin luminous.

Anticipation made my entire body hum. Pausing with my eyes closed, I took a few deliberate breaths.

Hawk was waiting out there to dance with me.

Pinching myself out of a dream seemed like a cheesy thing to do, but I was suddenly struck by the impulse. I shrugged my shoulders, rubbed my fingers against my palms, and touched my cheeks instead.

Yep. This was really me. This was really happening.

With a fortifying breath, I opened the door.

I expected the lights to be their merriest bright, the way they’d been when Hawk had first turned them on. The only illumination now came from the upper lights above his desk, dimmed so the majority of the glow streamed from the immaculate Christmas tree in the corner.

Stillness muted everything, leaving room for strains of soft music from hidden speakers.

Hawk sat in one of the leather armchairs on the rug in the room’s center, but at the sight of me, he arose.

With his blond hair swept messily to one side, his toned body drastically changed from dressy to casual—and wearing a shirt—he was attractive enough. Add a kickback grin, and it rendered me nothing more than joints and synapses.

“Much better,” he said, raking his gaze over me.

I hugged my torso. “You, too. Fortnite?”

He plucked the black shirt with its graphic of a character on the front. “I warned you. Maybe when we’re done here, we can have a marathon.”

I relaxed, loving this side of him. He seemed so normal like this. So not billionaire.

“I’ve neverplayed,” I admitted.

I didn’t have much time for video games. In all honesty, I was surprised he did.

“That we must remedy,” he said.

“But?”

He inched closer. “But right now, you and I have a previous engagement.”

I moseyed toward him, my steps silent on the hardwood floor. “Where are we dancing?”

He offered me a hand and guided me toward the tree. The shades were drawn over his windows, offering us additional privacy. Standing close to him, my nerve endings began to stir.

I craved what was to come.

I wanted his arms around me.

Hawk granted my unspoken desire. His hands slid to my waist, pulling me near.

My breath quickened. My knees slackened.

“This feels forbidden, somehow,” I said, allowing my hands to rove up to his shoulders.

“Does it?”

“Mm-hm.”

His hands closed at the small of my back, sending a shiver through me. I was too preoccupied to say anything else.
