“That’s not funny. You wouldn’t want me to say that about Jill – and how she put up with you for twenty years, I have no clue.”

“True.”

“Yep, pop the hood and start the truck,” the man instructed and walked to the front of the truck. Daphne did so and saw as he was lifting the hood, the two of them were talking. She couldn’t hear a thing, but saw the bearded guy shaking his head ‘no’ and pointing at her.

She wanted to know what they were saying.

Clutching her Maglite and slipping her pistol into her pants, under her shirt, she got out of the truck and walked over, hearing them talking.

“… Dude, Jill will love her, and she has the biggest heart. Did you see the amount of stew she cooked? That poor girl looks like she’ll blow away in a good gust of wind, and you’ve got plenty of room at the house.”

“Logan, you are not going to push your schemes on me…”

“I’m not, but she needs help, and there’s no one else around…”

“Look, you’ve already got three people headed up my way…”

“Four, actually. You and Jill have big hearts – and cabins aplenty. What’s the harm in helping one more poor lost soul?”

“What about Collins,Romeo?” the man with the beard taunted, and the guy in camo rolled his eyes before smiling.

“Fine. I havefivepeople headed toward you over the next few weeks who desperately need a second to get on their feet, which means we have an odd number. Let me talk to her…”

“No way, Logan…”

“Fine, I’ll just call Jill and tell her you left some poor helpless waif-of-a-girl on the side of the road, in the dark, and you…”

“Look, you warped, sadistic, son-of-a…”

“Um, hello?” Daphne blurted out, interrupting the two of them. “You can’t exactly diagnose what is wrong with my truck if you are discussing me behind the hood – and who are you calling ‘helpless’?” she snapped, looking at Logan, the guy in camouflage. “If you make a move, I’ll show you just how ‘helpless’ I am.”

“Oh really?” Logan grinned and looked at the man with the beard – who swiftly cursed aloud. “I like her.”

“I hate you,” Brawny-the-quicker-picker-upper said bluntly at the man.

“You love me, and you know it.”

“Shut up.”

“That’s his love language,” Logan said to her, causing the other man to throw up his hands in the air as he walked off… and Daphne burst out laughing at the duo. For would-be-murderers, these two were terrible at it, she realized and hesitated.

“Who’s Jill?”

“His wife.”

“What is going on with my truck?”

“I don’t know. I’m a captain in the Army, not a mechanic.”

Daphne gaped as the man chuckled knowingly – as a distant but loud ‘I told you!’came echoing towards them as the bearded man walked back up to them with a cell phone to his head.

“Yes, I know, Jill… No, Logan’s about to get his butt kicked or miss his flight when I leave him stranded on the side of the – no ma’am. No ma’am. I promise that I won’t…”

Logan looked at her and smiled.

“His wife loves me,” he whispered loudly. “She’s a real gem, and when she takes you under her wing, you’re family. He’s not gonna leave me here.”

“I might!” the man snapped and then focused on his phone. “No, sweetie. I won’t. I promise. Are you sure about this?” – and sighed heavily, holding out the phone to Daphne. “She wants to talk to you.”
