“Oh, it’s most definitely a thing, Mags,” Clay drawled with confidence. I lost sight of Maggie’s shocked face when Clay turned me in his arms. His free hand tilted my head back, and just like that, he kissed me. Deep and wet, the kiss was most definitely a statement. I could hardly remember my name when he pulled back and I stared at his smiling face. “You should make sure you tell everyone,” he muttered before turning to her.

“Well, then.” Her wide eyes connected with mine before she turned to look at Clay. “I’ll take out an ad in the paper.” She grinned. “What can I get you two?” she asked.

After putting in our orders, two cinnamon rolls and two coffees, we took the booth in the front of the coffee shop. He sat right in front of me, and I smiled at him.

“I don’t usually like talking on the phone,” I mentioned randomly. His blue eyes darkened. “But you’re good on the phone.”

His hand covered mine on the table, and he leaned forward. “I’m pretty good in a lot of different places.” He winked with promise, and I playfully rolled my eyes at him.

“Talking seriously, that was fun.”

“I liked it, too.” His lips twitched, and I swear I fell a little harder.

“I heard,” I sassed and felt the deep guttural sound that rumbled through him between my legs.

“Eat.” Clay pointed at my cinnamon roll. “What time do you have to open the diner today?”

“I don’t. Maya is, and Gina is coming in later.”

“You got the day off?” I nodded. I would have thought this would have made him happy, but instead, a surly expression painted his face, making me feel confused.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I was going to ask if you wanted to come over.”

“Oh, baby, I am more than coming over. Hurry up with that.” He pointed. “You got anything you have to do today?”

“Not really, just the usual laundry and maybe hit the grocery store.” I shrugged. It sounded lame, but honestly, even those things weren’t urgent.

“Good. You got plans now.” I felt my eyes widen. Not with irritation like it had before but with amusement.

“I do?”

“Yup. With me.”

“What about work?”

“Babe,” he said as if that was an answer.

“I’m serious, Clay. I know your work on the ranch is important. You can’t just drop everything—" I stopped talking when he lifted my hand. Just like that, my heartrate started to pick up. Our fingers tangled together. Our gazes locked. Those bright ocean eyes of his could probably talk me into anything.

On bated breath, I watched my sexy cowboy lift my hand to his lips and kiss my knuckles. “You think I finally have you, finally found a way to stop putting my goddamn foot in my mouth around you, and you have a day off from the diner, I’m not going to spend it with you? If you do, you’re nuts.”

“Clay—" My lips twitched, but he was used to me arguing with him at every turn.

“We got a date to go on,” he announced. I chewed on my bottom lip. He was sexy on a regular basis, but seeing him so determined to take me out after just finding out I had the day off was a whole other level of attractive.

But being me, I wasn’t going to make it totally easy on him.

“We do, huh?” I tilted my head and lifted a brow with a little attitude.

“Yeah, we do.” It was crystal clear we both knew I was going to go along with his plans.

“Okay, then,” I agreed and felt him relax. “So, if we’re going on a date, where we going?”

“You leave that to me. We just gotta make sure we go to your place and pack you a bag.” My thighs pressed together with anticipation of the implications packing a bag would mean.

I knew I was taking a chance.
