I swallowed, my tongue thick and weird. “Maybe. It depends on a few things.”

Adam’s brows snapped up and his voice went taut. “What things?”

“School stuff. Work.”

ARK, Bobby.

I shrugged. “Anyway, what’s the rest of the plan for tonight?”

“What kind of school stuff?” Adam asked.

“I don’t know yet,” I snapped. “I need to go to my classes first and see what’s going on.”

Adam’s eyes narrowed suspiciously. “Okay. If you say so.”

I cleared my throat and looked down at my jeans, making an offer I hoped he rejected. “You can come up, maybe? If I have to stay?”

“Maybe,” Adam replied coolly.

Leslie rolled her eyes. “Don’t get pissy about it now, Adam. For all you know, he’ll be able to come down next week. You just have to wait and see. Life isn’t all about what you want.” She sat up and smoothed her hair and her shirt. “Okay, I’m out of here. Later, we’ll meet at Mike’s room to go to Fusion.”

“Fusion?” I asked.

“A new dance club.”

“Ah. Cool.” I didn’t want to sit at a table by myself and watch them all dance in couples, but as usual, they expected I’d go along for the ride.

“It’s primarily a gay club,” Leslie said, watching me closely. “That won’t bother you, will it?”

An angry flare of life shot up in me. “Not unless it bothers you when I dance with a guy.” The words tasted delicious and a rush of adrenaline tore through me.

There. I’d done it. What was Adam going to do about it now?

Leslie’s smile was radiant. “That won’t bother me at all.” She turned to Adam, eyes sparkling. She mouthed, “I told you!”

Adam rolled his eyes like she was insane, and another flare of fury shot through my heart. He’d dismissed my truth. Like it wasn’t important. Like it wasn’t even real.

“Bye, guys,” she said, kissing Adam and waving to me. “Have fun!”

“You too,” I murmured, tension feeding on the flame in my gut.

As soon as the door shut, Adam locked it and whirled on me. “Why would you say that? Are you trying to get us in trouble?” His hazel eyes bored into me wildly.

“No,” I hissed. “I’m just being honest.”

He stared at me. “Are you going to come out to her?”

My jaw ached from clenching it.

“She already thinks you’re gay.” He took a deep breath and let it out, his eyes going distant. “I guess you could. It might make things easier, actually.”

I didn’t give a shit about making things easier. I wanted to make thingsright. I tried to keep my voice light as I asked, “Whose idea was it to go to a gay club?”

“Leslie’s.” He leaned back against the door. “Sarah was against it, but for some reason Mike was on Leslie’s side. I agreed in the end because it was starting to look weird how much Ididn’twant to go.”

I pointed at Adam’s shrine to me. “If you’re still trying to keep us a secret, how do you explain that?”

Adam laughed. “Strangely enough, she explained it for me.” He mimicked her voice. “‘Oh, that’s a good idea. That way you won’t miss him so much.’ Then when Mike made a snide comment about it, Les said, ‘Peter’s his best friend. The onlyrealbest friend he’s ever had, so back off.’” Adam grinned, his eyes going soft, warm, and happy. “Man, I love that girl. She won’t take people’s shit.”
