“Maybe moneycanbuy happiness.”

“No, it can’t. But sometimes it can buy protection.” Daniel motioned to the bartender. “A snakebite for him.”

The guy looked around twenty-six, and he narrowed his eyes on me for a minute. “ID?”

“Left it in the car,” Daniel said.

The barkeep grabbed a glass. “Listen, when it’s busier, I can’t risk it. You never know who’s in the club at night. Undercovers, the works. But I’ll pour this one for him, all right?”

“Thanks. And another for me too.” He turned to me. “Despite Barry’s opinion, I think you can handle it.”

The snakebite was sweet and dark, and it burned my throat going down. I held the next sip in my mouth a little longer, enjoying the mélange of scents and flavors.

Daniel propped his elbow on the bar, leaning his head on his hand. “So, have you considered any self-defense classes?”

I sighed. I hoped it hadn’t been a mistake to tell Daniel about the bullying. I didn’t want him rolling me in bubble wrap. “I might take one at UT this fall. I hear they offer them to freshmen.”

“Usually girls attend those classes, but it’s a good idea. I’ll go with you, if you want, so you won’t be the only guy in the room.”

“Nah, that’s okay.”

He shrugged. “Maybe I need to learn self-defense too.”

I chuckled softly and swirled my snakebite, watching the colors combine. “In that case, all right. But don’t come just for me.”

“If I’d already finished this drink, I’d probably be buzzed enough to say something about ‘coming just for you’ that would make you turn red.” Daniel smirked, his eyes glinting wickedly.

I blushed anyway.

“I love it when you do that.”

I rolled my eyes, but my heart skipped and my cheeks heated even more. I took another swallow of my drink to cover.

The bartender pushed some buttons on a CD player and turned on an amplifier. Chiming guitar now bouncing off the walls.

Daniel’s eyes lit up. “Hey, what do you know? I love this song.”

The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” poured from the speakers. Adam had preferred everything onDisintegrationto theKiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Mealbum. With Daniel bouncing his knee and smiling like he was, I was glad the song didn’t smack of Adam.

“Want to dance?” Daniel asked.

“Daniel, are you okay?”

He laughed, grabbed hold of my arm, and led me to the dance floor.

Dancing with Daniel was nothing new, but as the club filled up with bodies and the usual heat and thump of the music pulsed through us, the slight buzz from the snakebite combined with the strangeness of the new place and the excitement of our trip. Gradually, as songs came and went, the dance floor grew crowded. A real DJ replaced the CD player the bartender had been using, and things grew wilder, more frenzied. As the music rattled my bones, I found myself wrapped in Daniel’s arms, moving together much more intently and sensually than before.

Windy and Antonio were nowhere to be seen as one song spun into another. My hands rested on Daniel’s hips, his wrapped firmly around my lower back so our groins rubbed together with every move. I leaned into him, his chest against mine, and bowed my head to rest on his shoulder.

I smelled his skin and gave in to temptation, letting my lips brush his neck. He didn’t push me away. Instead he grabbed my hips and hauled me even tighter against him. My dick grew excruciatingly hard, both of us moving in a rhythm that wasn’t about dancing anymore.

If I lifted my head, we’d be kissing. The temptation gathered like a bomb in my gut. I pressed closer, bringing my lips against his neck again. Lighting the fuse, I ran my tongue over his flesh near the soft collar of his T-shirt, tasting sweat.

Daniel’s cock pushed against mine, and I shoved my aching dick back against him. And at that moment, hands grabbed us and jerked us apart. Windy, Antonio, and Barry were there, eyes bright and determined. As they broke us apart, the club air felt cool against the sweaty places we’d been pressed together.

“It’s time!” Barry shouted. “The show starts in three minutes. Get your paws off each other and come on.”

My stomach dropped in disappointment and I licked my lips to see if I could still taste Daniel’s sweet skin. He shot a regretful look at me over his shoulder as he followed Windy and Antonio, his cheeks flushed and eyes bright.
