“What are you going to do about it?” Dad sneered. “You gonna try to move me? I’d like to see you try.”

Mom kicked her chair back hard enough it tipped over before grabbing hold of his walker in a way that made me wonder if she was going to rip it out of his hands and let him drop to the floor. Instead, she leaned into his face. “I’m getting rid of you. God forgive me, but I won’t live with you another week.”

Dad swung his head forward, head-butting her hard. Mom cried out, falling to the kitchen floor, and I leapt up, rushing to her.

“What the fuck!” I shouted at Dad. “Who the hell do you think you are?”

Dad glared at me, and then turned to creep out of the room on his walker, cursing and muttering under his breath.

“Mom,” I gasped, tugging her up. “Are you okay?”

She rubbed at her forehead where I could see a good-sized goose-egg growing. Dad probably had one too, but I didn’t give a shit if he did. Let him have another stroke. Maybe this one would end his and our misery.

Mom murmured, “No, I’m really not.”

“Wait there. I’ll call 911—”

“No, my head is fine. It’s everything else. You see what’s happening here.” She burst into tears. “I can’t handle him alone for one more day.”

I stared into her wet eyes and knew it was the truth. She was going through more than she could handle, and this was her way of admitting that she was in a very desperate and fragile place. “Don’t worry, Mama. I won’t leave you until I’ve dealt with this.”

She collapsed in my arms, crying. “I don’t know what to do anymore.”

“I know, I know. So let me do it for you.”

I didn’t know what the hell to do either, but I knew one thing for sure. I wasn’t leaving my mother alone with that man wearing my father’s face ever again. I’d stay with her until we’d secured him a place at the senior care facility. No matter how long that might take.

But what about Minty?

He couldn’t come here. He wouldn’t be safe.

Not until my dad was gone.

I’d have to trust him to take care of himself. My stomach turned over with anxiety, and I held my mom closer, stroking her hair.

Minty

“You can stayat my place as long as you want,” Luke had said almost a week ago.

Now I stood alone in his basement, arms wrapped around mymiddle, my gaze shifting from contraption to instrument, to implement, to cage, to chair, to bed. I reviewed that first short and strained conversation again in my head. It’d started out well enough:

“Hey, baby, I’m glad you answered.”

“I almost didn’t, but I thought it might be you. Is everything okay? You’re late.”

“Actually, there’s a problem. I won’t be home for a while, a week or more. I need to stay here in Johnson City with my mom.”

“Why?”

“It’s a problem with my dad.”

“Is he okay?”

“No, and he hasn’t been in a long time. But don’t worry. I can handle it.”

I should have called him out on that. I should have demanded why he got to take care of things on his own, while I had to strip naked, gag on his cock, and scream out how much I loved myself while he fucked and humiliated me. But in my confusion, I’d found myself saying—
