“Oh, baby, keep on talking to me.”

“Get your tongue down there and get me ready.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

“No, not Your Majesty. Tonight, it’s me and you.”

“Yes, my beautiful, perfect, sexy Minty.”

He laughed softly as I slid beneath the blankets and got to work.

Chapter Thirty-Seven

New Year’s Eve 1991

Luke

New Year’s Eveat Tilt-a-Whirl was ablaze with joy. The dance floors were packed with queers of every stripe. Minty was out there now, dancing with his group of friends, twirling between Windy and a guy he talked less about called Antonio. Ryan was there too, but he was dancing off to the side, giving his Dom room to hang out with his friends.

I sat at the downstairs bar, keeping one eye on the drinks and the other on the clock. I didn’t want to miss my chance to kiss Minty at midnight. He looked so pretty tonight, dressed in a silver tutu skirt, ballet shoes, and a loose, see-through, snow-white crop top. He was the fairy prince of my dreams. I was beyond lucky to have him in my life.

I hadn’t thanked Barry yet for convincing me to take him on, but I would tonight. He deserved all the credit for changing both our lives for the better. He was working the upstairs bar, and Robert was doing his famous Renée DeShea drag performance a few minutes after midnight.

“Hey,” a voice said near my right ear. “Buy you a drink?”

I shook my head, my eyes on Minty. “I’m good, thanks.”

“Fair enough.” The guy didn’t take the hint, though, sitting on the stool next to me.

I swung around, ready to tell him to skedaddle. “Oh. Hi.”

He was more handsome in person than in Minty’s photos, which was saying something.

“Hi, I’m Daniel.”

“Yes, of course. I’m Luke,” I said, putting out my hand. “Nice to finally meet you. Minty says you’re—”

Daniel rolled his eyes, a humble smile on his face. “The best guy in the whole world.”

“Exactly.”

“A sweet delusion of Minty’s, but I have to admit I don’t hate hearing it.”

I got the bartender’s attention, and he came over, taking Daniel’s order. A Greyhound cocktail and a rum and Coke. When they were delivered, Daniel drank from the dark-colored one and put the pink one aside. It must be for Peter.

“So…” Daniel said with a heavy tone that warned me an inquisition about my intentions was forthcoming, and the storm clouds in his eyes told me Minty wasn’t misrepresenting the situation. This guy really might be a party pooper.

“I love him,” I said, cutting to the chase.

His eyes narrowed in evaluation of me. I might be ten years older, but I felt like a kid under his gaze. I needed to prove myself and make him believe in me.

I babbled on, “I’ll do anything for him. I promise I’ll protect him and keep him safe. Always.”

After a moment, Daniel’s lips tilted into a sweet smile. “Wow, you’ve got it bad. I recognize all the signs.” His eyes shifted to the dance floor, and he sighed, “Ask me how I know.”

Was that it? I had his full trust already? He’d been easier to win over than I expected him to be.
