This one seemed almost half-genuine. I wondered what the real thing looked like.

“He wasn’t bad, though. He liked fucking my mouth, and, because I let him, he wanted to do nice things for me.” He shrugged, going even redder. “I liked that.”

I lifted a brow. “I thought youdidn’twant the men you fuck to be nice to you.”

“This wasbefore,” Minty said, waving a hand dismissively. “He was middle-aged, cute, and chubby. He was completely in love with me.” He transferred pancakes from the pan to a plate. “And I swear on my mama’s future grave that his dick tasted like sunshine and rainbows.”

I leaned against the doorjamb, crossing my arms over my chest. A smile lifted the edges of my lips. “What does sunshine taste like?”

“Lemon frosting.”

“And rainbows?”

“Lucky Charms.”

I almost laughed, but he kept on babbling, ladling out more batter for another round of pancakes. “Best tasting dick I ever sucked. Hand to God.” He raised the ladle and paused, thinking. “Maybe he rubbed it with some sort of flavored oils?”

“Or out-of-date lemon frosting?” I suggested, stepping away from the door and coming closer to watch him make the pancakes.

“Maybe. But what about the Lucky Charms taste?” He seemed to genuinely consider the problem before sighing in disappointment when no answer appeared. “Anyway, my favorite pancake mix Ruben—that was his name—ever gave me was a fancy-pants organic brand called California-Suncakes. It cost like six dollars onthe shelf. No one ever bought it because that’s bonkers, right? No matter how good it is.”

I nodded, watching as the pancake pile grew on the plate.

Minty flicked off the stove and transferred the pan over to the sink. “So, I told him to always save it out for me, and he always did. He was so sweet.”

“Sweet in exchange for you deepthroating his dick,” I reminded him.

“No, I mainly just licked and sucked him the usual way. The better to taste him, you know?” Minty winked. I felt my own smile grow too. “Besides, he was hard up, so it didn’t take much for him to spunk—which, by the way, didnottaste like sunshine or rainbows.” He grimaced. “It was bitter as fuck.” Another sigh. “I’d still be there getting my free out-of-date goodies from that fine feast of man-flesh, but they fired me.”

“For blowing the night manager?” I hazarded a guess.

“Could be,” he said, thoughtfully, scrubbing out the pan. “Could be for offering to suck off a customer, though.”

My lips twitched into a smile. He grinned back at me, a shiver-inducing, shiny thing that felt almost real this time. Darkness still lingered in his eyes, untouched and untouchable by the superficially hypersexual conversation he was spilling out, but the smile at least was genuine.

“Anyway, I can’t vouch forthesepancakes,” he concluded, gesturing to the steaming stack on the counter by the stove. “You just had Aunt Jemima mix, which isn’t exactly gourmet, but a pancake’s a pancake. Hard to do badly.”

“Especially for someone who’s amazing at making them.”

He looked bashful, but shook the ladle my way, almost losing a fat drop of batter to the floor. “Don’t make fun of me.”

“I’m not.”

He moved the ladle and bowl over to join the pan in the sink, plated some pancakes, and slathered them with butter and honey before handing them my way. “Here. Thanks for staying up all night to take care of me.”

I took the plate from him and sat down at the table. He dropped down across from me with a stack half as large as mine. We both dug in. The pancakes were, as promised, fucking delicious.

“These are good,” I said.

Minty looked up at me, his eyes wide, the smile fading on his lips. I watched as he battled out the various reactions going off like bombs in his mind. Pleasure at the praise, swiftly followed by doubt and anger, and even, very briefly, rage. Wow. His head was a mess, and it’d only taken a single sentence to make it that way.

With his throat flushing and still mottled with another man’s bruises, I made up my mind. No matter what, no matter how long it took, I was going to crack this kid open. I was going to hurt him like no other person ever had, and he was going to kneel at my feet, beg me for more, and thank me afterward.

Andmyreward for all that work and devotion? Well, I was going to get to see the true heart of him. With a kid as gorgeous, conflicted, and confusing as Minty, what sadist wouldn’t want to see that? And it seemed I’d get morning pancakes too. A total win for me.

I hadn’t had many wins lately, and neither had he. Eating pancakes, watching him squirm at my praise? It was the most normal I’d felt in a very long time. That was worth something to me. More than words could say.
