I can still apples, and suddenly it hits me. The kid who bumped into me after psych class is when I first smelled apples.

Based on the small amount of daylight, I knew I would need to wait until after the game to dig and see who my mate was. I followed my favorite path to the back deck of my house. My paws still prancing happily on the soft ground.

I emerged from the woods and walked over to my apple tree, laying down on the ground to eat an apple that had fallen. As my jaws bit down on the fruit, juice sprayed my mouth, and I dropped the fruit to lick the sweetness from my lips.

I finally found my mate!

With a sigh, I snapped up the fruit, chewing happily, thinking about my sweet little buff wolf.

“There you are.” My dad leaned over the rail on the deck. “Needed a run, huh?”

After I swallowed my apple, I shifted back to my biped form and stretched. “It’s been the weirdest day, Pop.”

“Come, tell me about while I wait for the timer to go off.”

I ran up on the deck and looked at my dad with confusion.

“Sorry, Bas, your dad signed us up for dessert, and we needed to borrow your oven to finish baking things.”

I laughed and bent over to hold my knees. “Youlethim get you roped into that.”

He frowned. “Of course. It makes him happy.”

Still chuckling, I walked into my house and walked into the mudroom to grab some shorts before coming to sit at the table with my dad.

“I think I met my mate.” I closed my eyes and sighed contentedly.

“How?”

“Apples.” I opened my eyes and leaned forward on the table. “A small guy ran into me after class, and since then I’ve smelled apples.” I smiled at him. “Then on my run home, I met a small wolf and the apple scent was so strong.”

“Who is it?” Dad asked excitedly.

I pressed my lips together. “No clue.”

“So no one from our pack?” He sat back, scratching his beard.

“Nope.” I shook my head. “I escorted him home, then came home.”

“Hmm, what can you tell me about him?” Dad got up and checked on his baked goods.

I scratched at the scruff on my face. “He went into the classroom as I left. Maybe Uncle Dave can tell me his name.”

“That’s not a bad idea.” Dad looked over at the clock. “You oughta’ get ready for homecoming. We’ll see you at the run after.”

“Hey, pop? If I find him, can I invite him to join in the run tonight?”

“Dumb question, son. You know our code.” He winked at me and went back to peeking in the oven window.

I looked around my kitchen; I had one of the best stoves, a massive fridge and an island. I picked it all because I loved cooking, and when I found my mate, I hoped they did as well and I designed this kitchen for that reason.

The walls were a light blue, and I had vintage signs decorating the walls in here. It felt cozy, and I liked that.

I stood from the table and walked into my living room, smiling at the big, plushy couch. I thought about the young man from this afternoon with the corn-silk hair and pictured him snuggled up beside me watching a movie.

I also had two big chairs that were great for reading in. Plus the big bay window where my plants could get a healthy dose of sunlight. My dark carpet cushioned my feet as I walked through the earth toned room and down the hall past my guest bath, to my room.

Conjuring up his image again, I could see nights spent in bed. Sleeping, mating, playing. Anything and everything we wanted.
