“When I was pregnant?” She giggled.

“Yeah.”

“I did.” Miranda sighed, and I reached down to adjust myself. “Since my belly itched, I loved when someone would scratch it.”

“Were you dating?” I hurried to amend the question. “Not that it would be any of my business.”

“No. I haven’t dated.” She yawned again. “Single mom all the way.”

“Why are you being so nice about all this?”

She was quiet except for the soft sounds of her breathing. “Henry?”

“Yeah?”

“Was she a horrible wife?”

“You don’t want to know that.”

“Don’t tell me what I want and don’t want, asshole.”

“Yeah. She liked to drink, snort and party. She had no place or time for Dillon and plowed through her trust.”

“I heard about the accident.” She sighed. “Henry?”

“Miranda?”

“It wasn’t your fault.”

I didn’t know what to say back. She cut right to the heart of my guilt.

“Henry?” Her voice softened. “Are you still there?”

“Yeah.”

“Honey, I promise it wasn’t your fault. Victoria made a string of bad choices and unfortunately a lot of people were hurt in the process. But you have Dillon, and he needs you. And now you have Charlie. You can’t change what was.”

“When’d you get so smart?” I chuckled softly.

“When some asshole broke my heart.” She whispered.

“Thanks for the chat.”

“Anytime.”

“Good night.” I whispered.

“Night.” Her sweet voice made me smile.

“I love you.”

When I didn’t hear anything I looked and saw she disconnected the call.

Hopefully before I made an ass of myself.

Sleep came a little easier after talking to her, and morning came too fast.

I was stumbling around my kitchen when I heard the front door open, and the telltale sound of my mother’s heels clicking on the floor.
