I was in love with her.

“My suggestion is flowers.” He smiled at me. “An elegant bouquet sent to her work might soften her resolve.”

I sighed. “I need to get dressed.”

“We’ll see ourselves out.” Dad held up his cup as I got up, put my cup in the dishwasher and went upstairs to change.

Charlie was a ball of energy from the moment his eyes popped open. Normally, I loved days like this.

I needed more sleep for this.

“MoOoOoOom!” he came skidding to a halt in the kitchen. “Cans I call Dweelion?”

“Sure.” I finished pouring the water into the coffee maker and video called Henry.

My breath caught as his handsome sleepy face, and bare chest filled the screen. There was a smattering of hair that wasn’t there last time I saw him without a shirt.

“’lo?” His sleep filled voice did strange things to my body and I did my best to smile.

“Good morning, Henry. Charlie would like…”

“Mooooooooom, cans I asks?” He was trying to be slick, and failing adorably as only a child can.

Clearing my throat, I handed him the phone.

“Hi!” His curls bounced all around.

“Good morning, Charlie.”

“Charlie!” Dillon’s face took over the video. “My daddy says yous can be my brudder!”

“I can!” The excitement in my son’s voice brought tears to my eyes. “Mom! Can I has a brudder?”

“Absolutely.” I choked back a sob. “Charlie, Dillonisyour brother. And Henry is your dad.”

“Dweelion! We cans share a dad too!”

“Wear your rope today and I’ll wears mine!” Dillon patted his chest. “Wanna have pancakes for breffst?”

“My mommy makes gooder pany-cakes.” Charlie nodded, making his curls fly around. “Mommy? You makes us..”

I was already nodding. “I’ll make pancakes. You boys need to get ready, though.”

“Bye brudder!” They both shouted, Charlie dropped my phone and ran off.

When I saw myself in the small window, I cringed inside at how swollen and glazed with unshed tears my eyes were. “So I’m making breakfast. We...”

Don’t you dare let him see you cry!

I pressed my lips together, trying to gather my thoughts. “We’ll see you soon.”

Disconnecting the call, I dropped my head to the counter and let the tears flow.

How the hell was I supposed to face Henry?

The weight of the last five years felt crushing, and my world spun out of control.
