She sat there staring at me, then pulled out a cigarette.

“What are you doing?” I reached for the roll of toilet paper and blew my nose.

“Kid ain’t here, and I need this to unpack the bullshit you just said.” She lit it and took a drag. “Help me. Why does she get a say?”

I leaned back on the vanity, tears rolling down my face.

“Where’s your phone?” Tara sighed as her eyes landed on it. “Nevermind.” Reaching for it, she clucked at me. “You cracked your screen.”

“Whatever.” I shrugged.

Me

Can you keep Charlie tonight?

Henry

sure

“Baby daddy is on duty tonight.” She ashed in the toilet. “I already raised the bat signal. Lunch at the pub with the girls for therapy.”

I snorted. “You can’t just message Henry and …”

“The hell I can’t. One, I did it as you. Two, he’s the perfect babysitter.”

“Why can’t Margaret leave me alone? I thought after Victoria died I was done having someone make me feel less than human.”

“That right there is the problem.” She took a long drag. “Why the hell are you giving that cunt room to insult you? You don’t owe her shit. Not one iota. And letting her make you cry?” She shook her head. “Ran, she doesn’t deserve to be in your presence. Don’t give her that much power.”

“I kicked Henry out.” I slammed my head back.

“When?” Her eyes narrowed.

“He came back after he dropped the boys off.” I wiped my tears away. “I told him to get out and not talk to me unless it was about the boys.”

Tara’s eyes blinked a few times and her mouth opened and closed.

“I’m an idiot.”

“Yeah.” She nodded. “Now, get your sloppy ass in the shower. Get dressed. And then we’ll meet the girls for lunch.” Tara got up from the floor.

“I can’t do that. Charlie will be …”

“With his dad after daycare.” She frowned. “You need some therapy and hot wings. So get to it.”

“But…”

“No buts!” She threw her cigarette butt into the toilet. “Get up. Get showered.”

I watched as she left the bathroom. “You’re a bully!”

“Whatever.” She tossed back at me. “Let’s go! I’m hankering for wings.”

Growling, I got up and set the water, then stepped inside. In retrospect, this probably would’ve been the better way to get my tears out this morning.

I shouldn’t have kicked him out. I should’ve told him what his mother did.

The hot water felt good on my body and washed away the last few tears.
