“Daddy’s penis bounces.”

The boys jumped up and down a few times, and I heard Miranda burst with laughter.

“Why don’t you boys go watch some TV before bath time?” She giggled. “We can have some hot cocoa later.”

The boys whooped, and I heard them run from the kitchen as I came back in with a pair of sweatpants on.

“I was hungry.” She leaned back and looked at me. “Mashed potatoes, gravy and corn sounded good. There’s more on the stove.”

“I … uh … fed the boys before bringing them home.” My dad shook his head and tried to stifle his laughter. “I’m going to let myself out so you can …”

I felt my face heating from embarrassment. “Thanks.”

His laughter filled the hall as he walked to the front door to leave, and Miranda had her head down on the table, her entire body shaking as she laughed harder.

I got myself some food and took a seat across from her. “Spend the night.”

“Are you asking me? Or telling me?” She smiled at me and flipped her long curls away from her face.

“Asking.” I reached across the table and stroked the back of her hand.

I saw the indecision in her eyes and she shook her head. “It’s not that I don’t want to. I just think we need to slow things down. Let the boys get acclimated to things beforewedo sleepovers.”

Tilting my head, I sat back. “You don’t trust me.”

“It’s not that I don’t …” She scrubbed her hands over her face. “Henry. This?” She pointed between us. “This is new and scary and I need time.”

I wanted to understand, and in some ways I did, but we had a son together. And we loved each other. We should be a family.

She got up from the table and had a pair of my sweatpants rigged on her hips, and another of my tee shirts on.

“Charlie is welcome to spend the night with you, and if Dillon wants to spend the night with his brother at my place, I’mgood with that too.” She rinsed and put the dirty dish in the dishwasher before turning to face me again. “Please, give me time.”

I saw a tear roll down her cheek and I jumped up, going over to her. “Miranda, I’m sorry.”

She turned to me and wrapped her arms around my middle. I wrapped her in my embrace and pressed a kiss to the top of her head.

I’m not sure how long we stood there, but soon two sets of small arms wrapped around our legs.

“Charlie, I need to go home and take care of Soda and the dogs. Do you want to come with me, or spend the night here?” Her soft voice made my heart swell.

“Um. I’s go helps.”

“Tell Daddy and Dillon goodnight.” She stepped back and waited for him.

Dillon and Charlie embraced, and then he turned to me. “Sees you in da mornin.’”

“We’ll see you then, buddy.” I crouched down and hugged him. “You be good, and help mommy.” My voice came out hoarse and I felt like I was being choked from the inside out.

“I luffs you, Daddy.” Charlie leaned his head on my shoulder and I didn’t want to let him go.

Miranda picked her phone up from the counter and Charlie let go to go to her. “We’ll see you in the morning.” She picked Charlie up and walked towards the back door.

“Wait!” I straightened up. “Take my car, and I’ll come over in the morning in a work truck.”

“Work truck?” She looked confused.

“Yeah. Uh, I’m going to buy the construction company from old man Roberts. And I have a truck I take to sites after I drop little man off.”
