“Yes, ma’am?”

“Are you pregnant?” She peered down at me and I felt her eyes burn through my soul.

“I’m on the pill.” I shrugged. “Right now, I’m just getting over being carsick.”

“Uh-huh.” She twisted her lips. “That’s not what I’m asking.”

“She means did you do the deed?” Jo pushed at my leg.

“How can you be so calm?” I raised my voice. “Just because you and Vivi are doesn’t mean we all got knocked up.”

Mrs. Whitman pursed her lips. “Car sickness doesn’t usually last this long.” She sighed. “Tell you what, if you’re still sick in the morning, I’ll call your grandpa and we’ll get you seen. Deal?”

I threw my head back, hitting the wall. “Deal.”

“It’s dinner time.” She clicked her tongue and walked away.

“Hungry?” Jo asked, standing up, offering to help me up.

“No.” I shook my head and accepted her outstretched hand. “I just want to go back to sleep.”

“Get some rest.” She gave me a hug. “Um, when’s the last time you and Coop?” She made a sex gesture with her hands.

“A couple months.” I shrugged.

“I still can’t believe you slept with Richard’s little brother.” She giggled.

“Look. You made it sound fun. I was curious. He was willing.” I laughed with her.

She shook her head as she went to eat with her mom and grandma, and I went back to bed.

I spent the rest of the week down. Soup had become my best friend, and I was worried whatever bug I had, I would pass on to Jo.

Today my grandpa was meeting me at the doctor’s. I’d already gone in and peed in a cup and had some tests run at the lab.

We were sitting in the room waiting on results, and I watched him nervously tap his thumbs on his hat.

“It’s probably just the flu.” I offered, hoping to make him feel better and not worry.

“You don’t have a fever. Flus usually come with fevers.”

When our eyes met, I noticed the worry accompanied by something odd that I couldn’t place.

“What?” I felt deflated sitting there with him.

“Seems something’s been in the water.” He shrugged. “Is there a chance you drank from the same well as your friends?”

I felt my face twist in confusion, and then it hit me. He’s asking me if there’s a chance I’m pregnant.

“Grandpa …”

He held his hands up. “I know you weren’t just swinging on some rope with that Walsh boy.”

A knock interrupted our conversation as the doctor came in. “All the tests are back.” He took a seat at the small desk and looked between me and my grandpa. “It’s not the flu.”

My stomach fell to my feet. “Oh god.”

“She’s pregnant.” Grandpa wasn’t asking and when the doctor nodded, I jumped off the table and vomited in the trash can.
