And if I would’ve known on the trails that night would be the last time I’d ever see her, I would’ve done more than kiss her.

Heaving a sigh, I went back inside and finished unloading the truck.

On my drive back to the rental yard, I tried to find the words to say when I got home. I couldn’t imagine her being surprised by this. We hated each other.

I dropped off the moving truck, got in my SUV, and held the divorce papers for the drive back to the apartment.

Be polite, give her the papers. Get a shower for the sobriety celebration for dad tonight. Tomorrow a new house.

I parked and took a deep breath.

Here’s hoping she takes it well.

The moment I entered the foyer, I heard a child screaming. My heart stuttered in my chest and I ran down the hall to our apartment.

Dillon was in his highchair, covered in something red, screaming.

The door slammed behind me as I dashed over and got him out. “Shh, it’s okay, little man. Daddy’s here.”

His chubby hands patted my back, mimicking the way I patted his, and he started hiccupping from crying so hard.

I patted and bounced him as I walked through the apartment and couldn’t find Victoria.

Pulling out my phone, I called her.

“What, Henry?”

“You left our son home alone!” Dillon clapped his hands together.

“Ugh, I haven’t been gone long. I needed something from the store.”

“He’s two fucking years old!”

“He was contained.” She scoffed. “I gave him food, a cup of water and told him I’d be right back. And you’re home now.”

“We need to talk.” I felt my nostrils flare as I spoke through gritted teeth.

“Whatever.” She blew out a breath. “I’ll be home in about twenty minutes.”

Tossing my phone on the bed, I took Dillon into the bathroom and stripped us both down. I made sure to put a towel on the floor and into the shower we went.

Once I had him cleaned off, I noticed a small rash on his butt. “Great. She left you in the same diaper all day.”

“Dwate!” He clapped and stomped in the water on the floor of the shower.

Dillon was a happy kid, and watching him grow into this little man has been the best part of my life.

I rinsed him off, then sat him on the towel outside the shower to drip dry while I scrubbed up. After rinsing myself off, I dried off and then dried Dillon off.

We were in his bedroom when the front door slammed.

“I’m home, your highness.” Victoria’s voice grated on my nerves.

Ignoring her, I rubbed some lotion into Dillon’s skin, got him a pull up and put his little suit on before I let him play.

I crossed the hall into our bedroom and got out my suit for tonight when Victoria appeared in the doorway.

“What the fuck is this?” She waved the divorce papers at me.
