“What’re we celebrating?” I pulled my order pad from my apron.

Mr. Walsh took a drink and looked at me. “Tonight is my one year sober.”

Tears filled my eyes. “That’s phenomenal!”

“Thank you, Miranda.” He gave me a nod of his head.

“How?” I smacked my forehead. “Nametag.”

The older men chuckled.

“Miranda is a fabulous waitress.” Evan winked at me.

I cocked my hip out and gave him a look. “Only because you come in at the oddest times when I’m working.”

“I, uh, didn’t know you moved back.” Henry fidgeted with his utensils.

“I didn’t.” My voice was soft. Clearing my throat, I focused on Henry’s dad. “What can I get you?”

“Three of your biggest, greasiest, juiciest burgers.”

“Cheese?” I waggled my eyebrows at him.

“Yes, please.” He patted his belly.

“Would you gentlemen like more water or a soda?”

“Water.” Evan nodded.

The small cup was thrusted into my face. “Joosh.”

Giggling, I took the cup. “Can you say please?”

“Joosh.” He nodded. “Peas?”

“You got it little man.” I winked at the toddler and my heart ached.

“Actually, if you wouldn’t mind. Could you cut the juice?” Henry tilted his head, and I noticed the claw marks on his cheek.

“I know what to do for little people.” I snapped, walking away.

Fuck me running. Henry’s every bit as handsome as he was in school. Fucking cocksucking prick. And he’s so cute with his son.

Guilt filled me.

At least he is with the son he knows about.

“Big E! I need three pucks, take em’ to Wisconsin, and run through the garden with a side of frog sticks.”

“Getting’ it on deck!” He called back, and I put the ticket up on the wheel, sending it around.

Gene came walking through the swing door with Evie on his heels.

“You’re getting good.” Evie smiled at me.

“Thanks, Evelyn.” I grabbed a towel and wiped the counter down. “How’s Edie fairing?”

“Good. But she’s grumpy.” The small girl shrugged.
