Edie shrugged.
“It could be worse.”
Edie picked up her dry erase board and scribbled on it, showing me the message.
IS HENRY YOUR BABY DADDY?
I nodded.
THAT’S WHY YOU LEFT
I nodded again. “In all fairness, I tried to tell him.”
She lifted one eyebrow with pursed lips.
“After I came home and found out. I snuck out and had him meet me at the treehouse. I told himyou’re going to be a daddy, and he yelled out dammit, and said he didn’t want it.”
Her face twisted up in confusion.
“I know.” I threw my hands up in exasperation. “That’s why I agreed when grandpa said we could move and get a fresh start. And I know I saiddon’t tell me shit about Henry.”
She lifted her hands and gave me a smarmy smile.
“You know. For not being able to talk, you sure are saying a lot.”
YOU NEED TO TELL HIM
“No shit, Edie.” I snapped and shook my head. “Sorry. I shouldn’t get angry with you. I just don’t know how to go up to him now and say,hey look what we made!”
She tapped on her board, making me read it again.
“I know. I will.”
She motioned to the door.
“Edie, tonight is his dad’s one year of sobriety celebration. He came home to find she left Dillon alone, strapped in a highchair and he’s planning divorce.” I pulled the scrunchie from my hair and shook out my curls. “Tonight’s not the night, but the next time I see him, I promise.”
She reluctantly nodded and cleaned off her board.
“I need to get Charlie home and in bed. It’s been a long day for us both. And tomorrow I have classes.”
She signed thank you to me and waved at Charlie as we left the room and went outside to get in the car.
“I love you, sweet boy.” Leaning in, I pressed a kiss to his forehead.
“Dub dub.” He giggled.
Was it wrong to hope I didn’t see Henry again anytime soon?

Watching Miranda leave the room, my eyes were locked on her. “So, uh, when did she start working here?”
“Smooth.” Gene laughed. “Real smooth there, Romeo.”
“Order up!” Big E rang the bell and Evie came through the swinging door, grabbed the plate, and brought it over.
“Big E made you a fresh one.” She smiled.
