The reassurance in his grip anchored her, and she let out a soft sigh, leaning into the strength he offered. “And you, Daddy? What haunts the president of The Watchmen MC after the kickstand's down?”

He chuckled, a deep sound that resonated with honesty. “Guess I'm afraid of not being enough, especially for someone as incredible as you. It's a fight, keeping' those doubts at bay. But when I see you smile. it reminds me why I'm fighting'."

Their exchange flowed effortlessly, the connection between them deepening with each shared truth. She never thought he had fears or insecurities. Confessing them to her made him even stronger in her eyes. She was the luckiest girl in the world, even if her ass burned a deeper red than the spaghetti sauce on her plate.

CHAPTER 5

LUCKY

Hanging up with Hunter, Lucky swore under his breath. After a beautiful night with Trinity, the last thing Lucky wanted was to deal with this bullshit. He called the men to an emergency meeting and headed toward the compound. The roar of Harleys shattered the dusk outside The Watchmen's clubhouse. The rumbling engines were a dark chorus to the storm brewing within. Lucky stormed through the heavy doors, his boots pounding the floor like the heartbeat of a war drum. His brothers, gathered around the worn wooden table that had seen more secrets and strategies than any war room, looked up expectantly.

“Listen up," Lucky's voice was a low growl, the anger in it as palpable as the tension that tightened every muscle in his broad frame. “Viper has betrayed us.” Viper was a member of The Spartan Watchmen’s central Colorado chapter and one of those who had ridden with them on the recent rescue.

Lucky waved the email he’d printed out from Hunter. “This email says Viper has gone off the rails. He was paid to give information to the cartel and was supposed to not only deliver Hunter’s girl to them, but also deliver Hunter. To keep from losing his life, he promised to bring them another woman. Themembers of this group are outcasts from the Los Pedro Cartel. They were kicked out after they went to war with Hudson and some of the Valhalla men. They are ruthless and lack a moral code. They have a grudge still with Grand Ridge, blaming Valhalla for their fall from grace.”

“Will Viper be going after one of their women?” Slash asked.

“Not likely, but I let Hudson know of the threat and he and Bull are already on it. Their women will be protected. We don’t know who Viper’s target is or where he is at. All we know is that he betrayed us and is desperate. Desperate men are dangerous men.”

A collective gasp rippled through the group, followed by a cacophony of curses and clenched fists. The air turned electric with disbelief and betrayal, the scent of leather and gasoline mingling with the bitter tang of fury.

“Dammit, Viper was family!" Savage spat out, slamming his hand on the table. Of all the men in the room, Viper had gotten closest to Savage. They were part of a crew of Watchmen who liked to travel the entire state several times a year, camping and fishing along the way.

“Family?” Ghost's voice cut through the uproar, sharp as a knife. Ghost was a member of Spartan Elite. He’d ridden back to Grand Ridge for a quick visit after the mission. “This is treason against our code. Do any of you have women he could be putting in the crosshairs?”

“Trinity…” Lucky's thoughts flickered to her, his Little Rabbit, could she be a target because of Viper’s treachery? The thought coiled in his gut like barbed wire, protective instincts flaring hot and fierce. Immediately, he picked up his cell phone and called her.

“Hey, Daddy. I was just about to call you.” Her voice sounded strained.

“Little Rabbit, what’s wrong?” Lucky asked, rushing to the doors.

“I was wiping down the counter and there was a weird note left on a napkin.”

“What kind of note? Can you take a picture of it and text it to me?”

“Yeah, of course. It says, ‘meet me in the park at one by the fountain. Come alone. Lucky is in trouble. Only you can help him.’ What’s this all about? What’s going on, Lucky?”

“We believe one of the men on our mission last week has gone rogue. He’s betrayed The Spartan brotherhood completely. Did you see anyone in the shop before the note was left?”

“I was in the back-office processing payroll, Jasmine was out front. I can ask her.”

“Can you pull the security footage?”

“I don’t have any?—”

“I’ve seen the cameras,” Lucky said.

“Yeah, but they aren’t hooked up to record. I can monitor them from anywhere in the world online in real time, but they don’t actually record or report anything. I couldn’t afford the plan…”

“Slash, call Jay. I need Day & Night outfitted with top-of-the-line surveillance security, now.” Lucky waited for Slash to nod before he returned to the conversation. “I’m sending Detective Dax Allard to pick you up. He’s closer than we are.” The compound was on the outer limits of Grand Ridge, it would take entirely too long to get to her. Mad Dog nodded toward him. Within seconds, he was on the phone with Dax. “Listen to me very carefully, Little Rabbit. The only person you are to get in the car with right now is Dax. He will bring you to the compound where you will be safe. Get me?”

“I get you, Daddy. Are my employees in danger?”

“Honestly, I don’t know. Why don’t you close up shop and send them home, just to be safe.”

“Yes, Daddy.”

“I’ve got to go now, Little Rabbit. I’ll see you soon.” He wanted to go get her himself, but the sooner she was in the safety of men he entrusted, the better.
