“This isn’t the place for this discussion,” Lucky answered. “We can talk privately when you get off.”

“Oh and how will I know you will still be here and won’t disappear into thin air again?” She fisted her hands on her hips and stared him down.

“I told you when I called that we got called away to help some friends.”

“That’s it? That’s all I get?”

“For now.”

“Un-fucking-acceptable.”

“Watch your mouth, Little Girl .” Lucky’s volume had dropped to barely audible. If she’d been a wise woman, she would have taken the hint, but no one had ever called her wise.

“Watch my mouth? Did you forget where we are? You are in my shop. I call the shots here.” The flash in his eyes was like a starving predator spotting his prey in the open field.

“Is that so?” He challenged. “If I were you, I’d be very careful what I say next. You are already in so much trouble, Little Rabbit.”

“Trouble? You disappear for a week without a word?—”

“Trinity, I called and texted you while I was gone.”

“Still. That’s beyond the point. You left me in the middle of your compound, all alone?—”

“You were not alone. Kylie was with you.”

“All alone because you—” she pointed her finger at him and then tapped his chest aggressively with it, “Were not there.” She punctuated each word with a poke. Lucky grabbed her hand. Looking around the shop, he motioned toward Jasmine.

“Can Jasmine close the shop?”

“Yeah.”

“Good. Tell her you are leaving early and meet me outside.” Without another word, Lucky turned on his heel and walked out of the shop.

Trinity was shaking. She had a choice to make. Listen to Lucky or risk losing him. Looking around the shop, she realized there were only two customers inside. She glanced at the clock. They would be closing in twenty minutes for the day. Since it was Monday, they wouldn’t be reopening. Sighing, she slowly walked over to Jasmine.

“Everything okay, boss?”

“Yeah, Lucky is back in town.”

“You must be so excited!” Jasmine said. “Wait, if he’s back, why do you look like that?”

“Like what exactly?”

“Like you came over to yell at me or fire me or something.”

“I’m doing nothing of the sort. You are an exemplary employee. Can you close up for me?”

“Of course! See you tomorrow?”

“Yes, bright and early.”

“Have fun!” Jasmine called after her.

She got halfway to where Lucky leaned against his bike and stopped walking. By the look on his face, fun was not what she was about to be having. Crap. Double crap. Crap on a Pop-Tart.

“Come here, Little Rabbit.” He pointed to the spot directly in front of his black leather boots.

“I don’t think I wanna.”
