When she twists her head around to search the front of the establishment, our eyes lock.

I incline my head and her eyes widen, then she quickly turns away again and I bite back a smirk.

Chapter Five

Sophie

“Good God, did you see that man outside?”

“What man?” I ask innocently.

“Right. Like you missed that gorgeous hunk of lumberjack meat.” She snorts. “I felt like a voyeur watching him eye-fuck you.”

I roll my eyes and dismiss her with a flick of my wrist. “Nah, he was looking at both of us. Because we’re hot.”

“Yeah.” Lisa raises her brows. “I could have stripped naked in front of him, and only when you removed your clothes to cover me up would he have noticed my existence.”

“Now there’s a visual.” I laugh as I wait for one of the bartenders to acknowledge us. This place is packed for a Sunday evening, and the way my feet already ache in these heels and my skin prickles beneath all this excess testosterone… well, I may have made a mistake in coming along.

Lisa whistles and a bartender finally looks our way, then his face lights up when he spots Lees. “Hey, you,” she says as he approaches us. “Sophie, this is Max.”

I nod and smile at the guy, then use my friend’s brief distraction to nonchalantly glance toward the front of the bar. Sure enough, the handsome lumberjack has me locked in his sights and the intensity of his gaze makes my breath catch.

“Jesus, would you two get a room?” Lisa laughs, then nudges me. “What do you think sexy mountain man drinks?”

Startled out of my trance, I look back at her. “What?”

Lisa rolls her eyes. “Good grief, girl.” She shakes her head, then leans over the bar to place our order. A moment later, the bartender—Max—slides a bottled beer in front of me.

Frowning, I look up at him. “I didn’t order this.”

The bartender laughs as he lifts a silver cocktail shaker up in presentation, then begins to shake the contents. “It’s not for you, babe.” He gives a quick nod toward the front of the bar.

I groan and turn toward my scheming friend. “Lees.”

She shrugs innocently. “What? He looks like a beer drinker to me. You think it’s something else?” She looks playfully at Max, then back at me. “Maybe whiskey? Neat?”

“I don’t have time for men. You know this.”

“How much time could it possibly take?” She leans in and whispers, “Wham, bam, thank you, ma’am.” Flashing a conspiratorial smile, she adds, “And you know he’s the type that says ma’am.”

Biting back a nervous grin, I hold my ground. “I am not walking this beer over there to hand off to some random guy.”

“Okay.”

I narrow my eyes, but Lisa is focused on the bartender again, all heart eyes and fluttering eyelashes. “Okay?” I ask. Lisa’s concession was easier than it should have been.

“Yeah.” Lisa finally turns to look at me, her gaze flicking past me briefly before a really suspicious smile spreads across her face. “You don’t have to walk it over to him.” She jerks her head in the guy’s direction and my eyes widen as dread twists my stomach.

“No—”

“Because he’s walking to you instead.”

“Lisa!” I hiss.

But I can tell by that amusement in her eyes it’s far too late.

He’s right behind me, isn’t he?
