Page 58 of Dirty Weekend

“You should probably call that lawyer now,” Jack said to a stunned Joe.

Joe nodded numbly and watched as Ada was put in cuffs and led out of the kitchen.

“I’m sorry,” Jack told him. And then we left a shattered man alone in his kitchen.

“This has been the longest weekend of my life,” I told Jack after we’d left the Able residence.

“And it’s not even over yet,” he said. “If my calculations are correct, we still have sex, Chinese food, and a Peaky Blinders marathon ahead of us. And church, a funeral, and pre-marriage counseling with Lily and Cole tomorrow.”

“The job of a cop never stops,” I said. “But maybe don’t call it pre-marriage counseling in front of Lily. We don’t want to scare her off.”

“If I managed to talk you into marriage, I’m sure we can get to the bottom of Lily’s reluctance. But you’re right. The job never stops. It’s a good thing I’ve got a great partner to keep me company.”

Epilogue

Two weeks later…

The waiting was the hardest part.

Somehow, waiting with Jack didn’t make it any easier. But I’d promised him I would tell him whenever I was going to take a pregnancy test, and I was good for my word. Because if I wasn’t good for my word, this is the time I would go back on it.

The experts say it’s best to take the test first thing in the morning. I was at the point where I would try anything, so I got up, took the test, and then put it on the back of the toilet and left the bathroom as quickly as possible.

I pulled on a pair of sweatpants and an old KGU T-shirt and followed the smell of coffee down two flights of stairs. It was supposed to be my day off, but I was too wound up. And if the test was negative the last thing I wanted to do was stay home and mope all day. So I was rearranging things in my schedule in my head, and ultimately decided to get caught up on paperwork and inventory for the funeral home.

Jack looked up from the stove as soon as I walked into the kitchen. He was making breakfast and spooning eggs and bacon onto plates. I could see the nerves in his eyes, which was somehow comforting because Jack never got nervous about anything. He raised his brows at me in question.

“I left it upstairs,” I said. “We’re supposed to wait three minutes.”

He rolled his eyes. “Has it been three minutes?”

“Probably,” I said, tugging at the hem of my shirt.

“Come on,” he said. “We’ll go up together. And then we’ll come down and have breakfast. Maybe we can catch a movie this afternoon.”

“I thought you were going in today,” I said.

“I can do what I want,” he said, pulling me by the hand back up the stairs. “I’m the sheriff.”

“You’re also bossy.”

“That’s what makes me a good sheriff.”

I followed him back into our bedroom, only slightly dragging my feet. And then I just decided to get it over with. Me delaying it wouldn’t change the result on the test, so I took a deep breath and marched into the bathroom. I grabbed the stick without looking at it and went back to Jack.

Now was the moment of truth. Was I pregnant? I wanted to be. But I knew better than most that we didn’t always get what we wanted.

I looked down at the test. Then I looked at Jack.

“Well?” he asked.
