I moan.

“Yes, pretty girl, just like that.”

I moan again as he rubs against me over and over and over. There’s a feeling just within reach, one I do want, and my spine begins to tingle. I start to push my hips up, rubbing against his pubic hair harder, chasing the feeling.

“Such a good girl for me,” he says against my ear, making me shiver. Except I’m blocking him out, imagining Nik instead. His kisses, his hands on me, him inside me. “I knew you could do it.”

Leo grabs my hips and rubs me harder against him, and that’s when I see stars behind my eyes. I can’t even control the scream if I wanted to, shame filling me instantly as I reach my orgasm. He fucks me harder, then comes almost immediately.

“Get off me,” I growl, and he laughs.

“That was good, babe.” He pulls out of me and looks down at the condom. Even in the soft light, I can see the blood on it. “I see you were being honest, at least.”

Leonardo gets off me, puts his pants on, and leaves the room. I shove my face into the pillow and scream, the tears wetting it, then sit up in bed. My hands are shaking and so are my legs, yet I don’t bother cleaning all the blood up before putting my pants back on. I don’t even bother peeing after sex—though I know it’s important—before darting down the stairs and ordering an Uber from my phone. I open the front door, not bothering to look for Annie and tell her. I exit the house, bumping into my biggest nightmare.

Nik.

Oh,God, Nik.

His face is red, and there are tears in his eyes, causing me to avert my eyes to not see the pain in them. “Leonardo, really?” he growls. “How could you? How could you do this to me? It was supposed to be me, Camilla. That was mine!”

“I’m sorry,” I sob.

He punches his leg repeatedly, then stares at me with fire in his eyes. They look like they’re glowing in the dark, a bright shade of silver I will never unsee. They’ve never looked this way before. “You’re disgusting.” He shakes his head and I bawl. “I never want to see you again.”

“Don’t say that!” I beg. “Nik?—”

“I just did.” And then he walks away, leaving me behind just as my Uber pulls up.

I get in the car and don’t look back, my heart shattering in my chest all over again.

The last few days have been absolute chaos between my father teetering on the edge of insanity and Leo making my life impossible. Again.

Papà insists that Nikolai has nothing to offer him, but he seems to want to draw out my suffering by not killing him. Now we sit at the dining room table all alone, waiting for Leo to make it to the house as he decided to take a break from school yet again to make my life miserable. Doesn’t he get tired?

I’ve been trying to pry information from my father for the last thirty minutes. Only he hasn’t budged, and it’s pissing me off at this point.

“I’m not going to talk to you about this anymore.”

Anger burns a path in my veins all the way to my heart, and my chest feels like it’s on fire. I’m so tired of this, exhausted. I just want to live my life. Is that so hard? Nik and I got married in neutral territory. Pre-existing engagement or not, this should be honored. I bet if the Elite knew about this, they would never let my father prevent this or punish Nik for it. They would force his hand and make him accept it. It’s valid.

“What did he offer you,Papà?” I huff. “I’m tired of this, and I’m about to start involving others.”

“Is that a threat?”

“Yes.” I lift my chin in defiance and square my shoulders, spine ramrod straight to make me seem confident, even though I’m anything but. “So you choose.”

With an exasperated sigh, he relents. “He offered his seat at the Table.” What the fuck? Why would he do that? My father must sense my confusion because he adds, “Pavlov wants to give up his seat at the table in exchange for you. Said he’d do anything.”

Warmth spreads through my body at the thought of him wanting me enough, lovingme enough, to do that, but then dread follows when I realize the implications of this. He would mean nothing as Pakhan to his father’s people without the power the Table offers.

I shake my head, “No.”

He smiles, “I didn’t accept it.”

“So what would you accept?”

“Absolutely nothing.” His smile gives me the shakes. “I don’t want anything he has to offer, except an annulment.”
