“And what makes you think he will?”

“Because you’re mine,” Nikolai shrugs, revving his engine. “And no one will be marrying you except me.”

I laugh. “You’re cocky as hell.”

“Confident.”

Uh-huh. I don’t reply, and he doesn’t look at me again. The moment the flag is raised he takes off.

Being in a car with Nikolai while he’s going this fast is both scary and exhilarating. I don’t know which feeling I like better. I don’t even have time to look at the other car and if he’s winning because we’re zooming past everything so fast it’s pretty much a blur. It feels like freedom.

We’re on the same road as when Leo raced him, and the sharp turns don’t get less scary with Nik. He’s taking them so fast it feels like the car is going to flip any moment, and my nails dig into the palm of my hands the faster he goes. I hold my breath, my lungs burning, when he takes one curve excessively faster than the rest.

“You’re going to kill us!” I yell on an exhale, remembering saying the same thing to him last time.

“Do you have an answer for me?” he yells back, his eyes focused on the road.

“No!” I don’t have an answer to his proposal. I honestly don’t know what to think or how serious he is about it.

“Then I’m fine with killing us both right now,” Nik mutters.

“Don’t be stupid, Nik.” His nostrils flare at the nickname. “I don’t really know what to think of it.”

“What?” Nik accelerates even more and I scream. I peek a glance at the other vehicle except there’s not one. Where is he anyway? “My proposal?”

“Yeah. It’s not exactly a girl’s dream proposal.”

“You want dinner, candles, and a huge rock on your finger?” He smirks. Not really. It’s not my style, to be honest. Low-key and heartfelt is my style. His was perfect, although that’s not the point. “I can do that for you. I’ll do whatever you want.”

“Is this about getting back at Leo?” I ask him with fear in my gut. I mean, of course, it is. He’s always going to want to get back at Leo, but it doesn’t mean all his choices revolve around him. Even with that knowledge, I’m still apprehensive.

We reach a straight path with no more curves to be seen, thankfully, and I relax into my seat. “I will always want to get back at Leo, princess. This though… it’s about us. I want you, you want me. It’s a promise we made each other, remember? I’ll never forget about it. Plus, it benefits you to marry me.”

“How?”

“For you, it means you won’t have to marry him. For me, it means having you.”

Why am I having strong doubts about this?

“I don’t know, Nik, okay?! Maybe this is moving too fast!”

“I can’t breathe without you, Camilla.” My heart flips in my chest at his admission. “You’re the air in my lungs… the blood in my veins. Don’t take this away from me, please. Don’t takeyouaway from me.”

The biggest problem is that I do love him and want all those things with him. I want him. He’s the kind of man I could dive into for the rest of my life. The quiet ones are usually as deep as the ocean, the bottom dark and cold. I want to explore his depths more than anything.

“And what happens after? What then? Where will we live? What will we do? What money will we have? My father will probably take my trust fund.”

“It’s a good thing you don’t need to support yourself.” We’re past the finish line, but he hasn’t let up on the pedal. “I will take care of you, Camilla.”

“And you want me?” I ask with a small voice.

“I’m fucking crazy, out of my damn mind for you!” he yells, finally slowing down a bit, not enough to help me calm down. “So what’s it going to be?”

I don’t need to think about it anymore. “Yes, I’ll marry you.”

A thousand times yes.
