Blake was going to propose, on a chilly Valentine’s evening in a starlit rose garden.

The air sucked from my lungs, and I inhaled a deep breath, trying to think of something—anything—to say.

He shifted slightly so that we were face-to-face and said, “I brought you out here tonight to ask you… Penny Wilson, would you do me the honor of becoming…”

My heart beat so hard my vision started to blur. And then I heard him say the words.

“Mommy to Buster.”

“Buster?” The word stunned me into silence.

“Before you say no just hear me out.” A sheepish expression washed over him. “He’s neutered and well-trained and the owner assures me he’s toilet-trained.”

I didn’t think it was possible for my mouth to fall open any wider. “You want to get a dog?”

Blake’s eyes shone with excitement. “What do you think?”

“A dog,” I said, dumbfounded. “You brought me out here to sweeten me up for a dog?”

Blake knew that I thought our apartment was no place for a pet, let alone a dog called Buster.

“But he’s so adorable, Penny.” He gave me a puppy dog smile which seemed fitting given our current predicament. “It’s like we bonded instantly.”

“You already met him?”

He nodded. “He really, reallywants to meet you, Mommy.”

“Blake!”

I didn’t know whether to be relieved, disappointed, or angry.

A dog.

My proposal was a dog called Buster.

“Don’t be mad, okay, but—”

“Blake, what did you do?”

And then I heard it.

A little bark followed by Marissa’s shriek.

I turned slowly, my gaze landing on the ball of fur galloping toward us, my best friend charging after it.

“Surprise.” Blake murmured.

“Blake Weston, a dog, really? What the hell are we going to do with a dog?”

“I thought it would be good practice.”

“Practice, for what?”

“For when we have a baby.”

“A baby?” It came out all shrill and flustered, but then an over excited puppy careened into us sending the cheesecake flying.

“Down boy, down.” Blake clambered to his knees trying to calm the animal.
