For too long, I’d let my emotions cripple me, but staring across the room at Brittany, all I felt was red-hot rage.

In a strange way, it was refreshing.

Comforting even.

Like a warm blanket that would shield me from her venom.

I glided over to table one, a fake smile plastered on my face. Brittany didn’t notice me right away; she was too busy gossiping, no doubt, to the girl sitting on her left. I couldn’t help but overhear though as I served soup to three of the people seated at her table.

“The venue is booked,” she said. “Of course, Daddy and Ant insisted we have it at the country club. Exclusively…”

I threw up a little in my mouth but managed to swallow the bile down before hurrying back to the kitchen. It was as if those four little words had unraveled all of my progress over the last few weeks.

The venue is booked.

Blake wasn’t just engaged to the piranha; he was going tomarryher.

Give her his name.

They were going to build a life together. The big white wedding and cute little brown-haired babies with Blake’s eyes and her perfect smile.

Oh God.

Pain sliced through me.

As soon as I was out of sight, I leaned back against the wall and focused on catching my breath. Brittany hadn’t even spoken directly to me, and yet, she had managed to throw me into emotional turmoil.

Because she has what you want. She has Blake, and he loves her.

I shut down the traitorous little voice. No matter how right it was.

“Service,” an angry chef bellowed, ringing the bell one too many times.

I pushed off the wall and mentally checked myself before collecting three more bowls of soup and heading back into the suite.

This time, when I approached table one, Brittany’s eyes collided with mine. It was only for a second, but it happened.

A slow, knowing smirk spread across her perfect features. It snapped me back into action, and I placed the bowls in front of the next three guests.

If anyone noticed our exchange, they didn’t let on, and as I walked away from the table for a second time, the only eyes that followed me were hers.

“Everything okay?” Tara studied me as I entered the kitchen again. I nodded, pursing my lips. “Are you sure? I thought I caught a moment between you and the piranha just now.”

Ignoring her questioning gaze, I ducked out of her way, unwilling to get into specifics while I was working.

“Okay, okay, I’ll save it for later.” Tara’s chuckle disappeared out of the kitchen.

I grabbed the last two bowls for table one and set off.

Brittany was waiting for me this time. Her cold icy gaze tracked me all the way to the table.

I wished I were more like Marissa; she would have done something unsuspecting to throw Brittany for a loop.

All I could do was concentrate on not dropping the bowls.

I saved Brittany for last, and without a word, I placed the bowl down in front of her.

I imagined dropping the whole thing in her lap, reveling in her shrieks as she became covered in pumpkin and butternut squash liquid. She deserved it. For tripping me. For being a total bitch to me the first time she met me.
