He opens his eyes and looks down at me as I grin. “Don’t look so smug. You know I can do much worse to you.”

I laugh as I settle over him. “I know. Are you offering?”

His eyes darken, but the phone on the nightstand rings, jerking both our heads in that direction.

He scowls. “It’s almost two in the morning. Who the fuck would be calling now?”

I tense. “It can’t be good news this time of night, right?”

He shakes his head, then reaches over and grabs his phone, glancing at the screen. “It’s Luca; I need to take this.”

“Of course.”

Luca and Byron missing Mass was a little odd. It isn’t like Luca not to be there, but he said he had something important to take care of and that he would be at Antonia’s for Christmas Day. Still, he isn’t the kind of man who calls at two in the morning to say a quick hello.

Savage slides his finger across the phone and brings it to his ear. “Hey, is everything all right?” He listens, his eyes darting to meet mine. “What do you mean, youfoundhim?”

I raise a brow, and Savage presses his lips together in a firm line. His hand tightens around the phone, his knuckles whitening. Anger builds in his darkening eyes, and his shoulders tense.

“So, he’s with Nora now?”

“Nora?” I mouth to him, and he shakes his head, indicating he’ll fill me in once he’s done with the call.

“No, that’s fine. Bring him with you tomorrow, if you think he’s up for it. I’ll let Mom know in the morning to set one more place at the table. Okay. All right, I’ll see you later.”

Savage ends the call and tosses the phone onto the nightstand, scrubbing his hands over his face.

Dread coils around my spine. “What is it?”

He drops his hands, and his normally Caribbean-blue eyes, now darkened with concern and rage, meet mine almost reluctantly. “Byron and Luca found a little boy behind the club today.”

“What?”

“Apparently, he was”—Savage sucks in a shaky breath—”trying to make some money…”

“Oh, God.” My stomach turns, and I roll off him to the side to stare up at the ceiling. “Where are his parents?”

“Luca said something about the mom being dead. He’s looking for the dad. They brought Nora over to examine the boy, Jude.”

I glance over at him. “And they’re going to bring him to your mom’s house tomorrow?”

He shrugs. “It sounds like it.”

“Jesus…what are they going to do with him? They can’t…keephim?”

Savage gives me a hard smile. “I don’t know. Stone is there, and he’s trying to get some sort of emergency court order and approval from the Human Services Department so Jude can stay with them temporarily.”

“Wow…”

There isn’t anything else to say about it.

Suddenly, that warm, fuzzy feeling I had about what a great Christmas this would be disappears on a wave of worry and uncertainty.

CHAPTER2

NORA

Stone sidles up behind me, pressing his hard body against my back, and drops his lips to my ear. “You need to stop staring at the door, angel.”
