“But we have to find the people he sent after us, and somehow, he’s still doing it. If we turn him over to the Italian authorities, they’ll take care of it.”

“What if he gets out? What if he escapes? He’s so dangerous, Harper. I fear we’re looking at the next ten years of our lives trying to run from this fellow.”

Harper put his arm around her, pulled her over toward him on the couch.

“It’s okay, Baby. That’s not gonna happen.”

When she started feeling better and after she had a little bit of water, the two of them walked out into the parking lot and took a cab back to their hotel. Lydia took a shower, changed into her pajamas, and then went straight to bed, even though it was afternoon.

She woke up sometime later and heard the admiral’s voice on the other side of the bedroom door. She opened the door a crack and waved at the two of them.

Harper was over in a flash. “Sweetheart, how are you feeling?”

“Much better, thanks. I’m so sorry about this.”

“No worries. Do you need anything?”

“Maybe some water.” She looked over at the admiral over Harper’s shoulder. The man smiled back. “What are you guys doing?”

“We’re planning, Sweetheart. Going over the interview, making strategy.”

“I want to be a part of this. I’m supposed to be part of this.”

“Absolutely. If you feel up to it. Can you slip on some clothes and come out and join us?”

She got dressed. The more she moved, the better she felt. She drank water Harper brought her, brushed her teeth, combed her hair, and examined herself in the mirror. She noted she was still pale, but pink was starting to return to her cheeks. She had underestimated his effect on her. She should have prepared herself better.

As she entered the living room, the admiral stood, giving her a concerned look.

“Admiral Patterson, this is my wife, Lydia. She’s not feeling very well. The interview was quite hard on her,” Harper said.

Patterson stood and gave her a bow but didn’t approach. “I’m so sorry you had to go through that, my dear.”

“Thank you,” she said as Harper helped her sit down in their circle of three. He sat next to her, and Patterson took his seat across from them.

“We are just now discussing his disposition. You did well. We got a lot of things on tape. I think he did a pretty good job of incriminating himself for several lifetimes.”

“But are you going to free him? I think he’s too dangerous to let him lose. You can’t.”

His answer frustrated her. “I agree. But the quickest way to get you guys some relief is to locate and capture the couple who have been after you in California. He’s useful to us if we can get their information out of him. And he’s promised.”

“You can’t trust a thing he says. Don’t do that.”

“I do understand how you feel. He’s pure evil, for sure. But we have ways of seeing to it he won’t be able to get to you two. We’re planning it now. You don’t need to worry about that, Sweetheart. Your part is done. You did the heavy lifting. Now we’re putting things in place to act on all that information you helped us get. Thank you, and I’m so sorry.”

“He’s got something planned. I know he does.”

“He told you that? I didn’t hear—”

“I can just tell.”

“Lydia is very intuitive. You forget, they spent a couple of years near each other. She knows him,” added Harper.

“Yes, I’m aware.”

“But he’s not the same man, Admiral. He’s twisted. Bent. I don’t think he’s fully cognizant of what he’s doing.”

“Yes, and he’s deathly afraid of staying in a jail cell for any extended period of time. You got that out of him. I think that’s his motivation,” Patterson answered.
