“I’m sorry,” she breathed.

“Babe, I kissed you. Why are you sorry?”

“I have no idea.”

Chuckling as I stood, I moved to the other end of the couch and sat, willing my cock to settle down before she noticed the bulge in my jeans.

“First of all.” I pointed between the two of us. “This is happening.”

“Luc—”

“No,” I cut her off. “You had your chance to talk, now it’s my turn.”

Her head tilted to the side and her eyes narrowed, clearly not happy with my highhandedness. Damn, she was adorable when she was mad. I’d have to remember to piss her off every once in a while.

“I know you’re pretty busy during the week with school and my work schedule is crazy at the moment, but we need to figure out a way to get to know each other better. We’ll start with Saturday. I’ll pick you up at six.”

“Do I get a say?” She raised her brow in question.

“Are you going to try to worm your way out of our date?”

Instead of answering, she said, “I understand we have to get to know each other in order to pull off the whole boyfriend-girlfriend thing next month, but can’t we just meet for coffee and exchange stories?”

“No.”

“No?” she huffed.

“No, you don’t get a say. No, we aren’t meeting for coffee.”

“You’re being unreasonable, Luc. We’re pretending to be a couple. That’s how it works.”

There were always bumps in the road of every new relationship, but she didn’t know the extent of my feelings, which were far from fake. For now, I was content to let her believe what she wanted, so I stood and made my way to the door. Emory Daubson was a game changer, and I’d scale every mountain in my path as long as she was the prize on the other side.

“You don’t get it, Emory.” I looked over my shoulder and zeroed in on her eyes. “But you will.”

“What don’t I get?” She moved to follow me. “Luc?”

“Six o’clock Saturday, babe. Lock your door behind me.”

I waited until I heard the click of the locks engage before I trudged down the steps. Alec was waiting by the curb to drive us to our weekly family dinner at our parents’ house.

“You’re smiling,” he grunted.

“Yeah.”

“It’s freaking me out.”

“Me too,” I agreed.

“So it went well?”

“She thinks we’re going to”—I used air quotes —“fake date. So I’d say it didn’t exactly go the way I wanted.”

Leaning my head back against the seat, I closed my eyes. Alec wouldn’t push me any further, but the same couldn’t be said for my other two brothers. Until yesterday, Alec was the only one with an inkling about my interest in Emory. I was seething and irrational when I called them all after she was injured, and given the fact I’d ignored no less than twenty texts from Gabe and Rico in the last twenty-four hours, I’d say they were not onlyin the know…they were gearing up to give me a load of shit.

Maybe it wouldn’t be such a horrible thing. They were both in serious, committed relationships, something which I knew next to nothing about. I wanted a real shot at a future with my beauty, and if that meant asking those two knuckleheads for advice, then so be it.

“Wake up, asshole.”
