“I know, Emory, but I’ll continue to fight those battles by your side until I take my last breath. You’re worth it, my dear girl. And don’t you forget it.”

“Love you, Gigi.”

“Love you too, Bear.”

Too exhausted to deal with Monday’s lessons, I opted for another glass of wine and a nice long bubble bath. I’d deal with my father and his antics another day.

Chapter 2

Luciano

“HEY, UNCLE LUC,” Sophia, or Fia as we’d started calling her, exclaimed as she climbed into my car. “River and Rico busy again?”

“Yup,” I answered; the lie rolled off my tongue easily.

For the past week and a half, I’d volunteered to pick Fia up from school every chance I got, hoping to catch a glimpse of a certain blonde. Unfortunately, I’d been unsuccessful thus far. Not that I didn’t love spending time with the kid because I absolutely did. She was my niece, regardless of whether or not she was blood.

“So where are we headed?”

Before I had a chance to answer, Emory exited the side door of the school and began to cross the lot toward her car. She looked every bit as put together as she had the first time I’d laid eyes on her.

Her hair was perfectly curled and pulled back at the sides, showcasing her beautiful face. She wore a long, black coat which hung almost to her knees, and dark pants with even darker high-heeled shoes, making her legs appear miles long.

What made me reach for the door handle though, was the angry-looking man and pimple-faced kid marching toward her with purpose.

“Uh…Uncle Luc?”

“Stay here, Fia,” I demanded. “Lock the doors.”

I rounded the trunk and picked up my pace just as the jackass stepped into her space and started spouting off.

“Who the fuck gave you the right to question my son about his homelife?”

“Mr. Jacobs—” Emory tried to interject, but was cut off.

“He’s clumsy!” the idiot shouted, taking a step closer, while the poor kid at his side jolted.

“Back up,” I growled.

I positioned myself in front of Emory and crossed my arms over my chest. This guy had tried to use his size to intimidate her, but I had a few inches on him. When he opened his mouth to speak again, I could smell the beer wafting off his breath

“This doesn’t concern you,” he sneered.

“Oh, but it does.” I leaned closer. “Ms. Daubson is a family friend and you’re drunk. Call an Uber and go home.”

“Dad, let’s just go.” The kid reached for his arm, then flinched as the man whirled on him.

“I’ll deal with your dumbass at home.”

“Seth,” Emory spoke quietly, “go wait by my car and I’ll drive you to your house.”

Jesus. I was gonna tan her ass for getting in the middle of this shit. Not that I could blame her, because I was about to do the same thing, but she needed to let me handle it.

“The fuck you will, you stupid cow,” Jacobs hurled.

My vision went red at his words, but before I knocked him on his ass, I pulled the phone from my pocket and dialed Caleb. When he answered, I quickly, yet quietly, relayed the situation, asking him to send a couple units to the middle school immediately.

Maybe a night in the drunk tank would be enough to cool his jets, but it was doubtful. I’d come across guys like him before; men who thought they ruled the roost. So, the fact he was going to be taken down a peg or two would most likely only add fuel to the fire, and there was no way in hell I wanted Emory anywhere near the prick when he exploded.
