PROLOGUE

Allesandro

“THAT’S IT, FIREFLY. Come for me.”

I powered into her tight heat twice more, my hand cradling her head to keep it from slamming against the wall of my apartment, before I buried myself deep and shuttered through my release.

“Oh, God,” she groaned, her nails digging into my shoulders hard enough to draw blood.

Christ. What the fuck was I thinking? She already had a slight concussion, yet here I was, fucking her like my life depended on it.

Quinlan James. Five foot seven with flaming red hair and an attitude which rivaled mine on any given day. There was something about the sharp-tongued little devil that revved my engines though. Sure, most of my thoughts revolved around tanning her fine ass, and not in the way we’d both enjoy. But on occasion, I caught a glimpse of something hiding behind those exhausted emerald-green eyes. Something which made me want to pull her close and protect her from the world.

“Uh, can you put me down now, big guy?”

Her timid voice brought me out of my musing, just in time to see her wince as I withdrew from her body.Shit.The desire to have her had been so intense when we’d entered my apartment, I hadn’t bothered with stripping either of us, meaning we were both almost fully clothed.

“Did I hurt you?” I reached out and ran my hand down her arm. Her body stiffened at the contact, making me feel like a complete jackass.

Of course you hurt her, dipshit.

She’d been attacked at her job less than six hours ago, so when the nurse at the hospital said she needed to be watched for the next twenty-four hours, I brought her home with me. It was an innocent enough gesture until she opened her mouth and started spewing her nonsense about being able to take care of herself. The kiss was only meant to shut her up, but the moment my lips touched hers, my body responded in a way I’d never felt before. Sparks flew and all rational thought was tossed out the window, leaving only the undeniable urge to claim her.

I shook my head, dismissing the notion Quin was mine the second it popped into my brain. She was wild…untamed, where I was a master of control. For me, there was no alternative. Being a prisoner of war would do that to a person and ever since my rescue, I swore there would never come a time when I was not in complete command of my life.

There was definitely attraction between us, my dick could attest to that, but she was hiding something behind the snarky comments and the carefully constructed wall she’d built to shield herself. Having a relationship with Quin would bring a whole host of challenges to my life, and I wasn’t sure I was in the right headspace to deal with it. So why was I having such a hard time letting go of the idea?

“You’re big, but you didn’t break my bits, del Toro.” She rolled her eyes to the heavens, causing another grimace to cross her paler than normal face, while pulling up her pants.

“That shouldn’t have happened,” I started, realizing too late how badly it sounded.

“You couldn’t have waited for me to clean up the mess you made between my thighs before you started having regrets?” She shook her head.

“Quin—”

“Thanks for the fuck,” she interrupted. “But I don’t need your bullshit. I’m outta here.”

Taking her phone out of her pocket, she pounded a few keys on the screen, then slipped it back in her pants before reaching for the door.

“Wait. You need someone to watch you overnight.”

What I really wanted to say was I didn’t regret a thing except for the timing of our little rendezvous. Unfortunately, when she lifted her gaze, I knew what we’d shared a moment ago was over. For a half a second, when she’d fallen apart in my arms, those walls had slipped, but now I watched as the hurt faded into anger while she rapidly put it back into place.

“Don’t worry. I’ve always taken care of myself.”

The door slammed behind her, leaving me with my mouth agape. It took two minutes before my feet finally came unglued. Racing out of my apartment and down the stairs, I managed to catch sight of her as she got into the back of an older four-door sedan.Great.At the very least, I should have been the one to drive her home, not some stranger. Honestly, I wouldn’t put it past the little shit to have the Uber drop her off at her car, despite the fact she was told not to drive.

I stood on the sidewalk until the taillights disappeared from my view. Today had gone from bad to worse in the blink of an eye, and there was no one to blame but myself. As I walked back toward my building, words Quin said a few minutes earlier flashed through my mind, nearly bringing me to my knees. Something about the mess between her thighs.

Fuck! No condom.

CHAPTER 1

Allesandro

IT HAD BEEN six weeks since I’d been inside her. Six damn weeks of her ignoring me, and me trying like hell to ignore how much she tore me up inside. I’d almost convinced myself the attraction was all in my head, but then I’d catch a glimpse of her fiery red hair in the distance and my heart would start thundering in my chest.

Get ahold of yourself, Alec.
