In the dimly lit parking lot, his unusual gunmetal gray irises appeared almost black as they stared in my direction.

“Come here, Firefly.”

He held out the arm farthest from the flailing drunk, who continued to complain loudly from the ground, however, I couldn’t hear any sound over the pounding of my heart. Without another thought, my feet carried me forward until I was plastered against his side.

“You okay?”

The question took me by surprise. Was I?

“Yeah,” I nodded. “Just tired.”

Tired was an understatement. I was utterly exhausted. But it was the fact I felt safe for the first time in what seemed like forever which had me melting farther into his embrace.

“Adrenaline crash. Can you hold on long enough to talk to the cops?”

Sirens sounded and lights flashed as the Jeep belonging to the chief of police, Caleb Matthews, sped down the road, followed closely by an ambulance. Both vehicles pulled into the lot where a small crowd of Bliss employees had gathered.

“It’s not like I have much of a choice,” I huffed.

_______________

TWENTY MINUTES LATER, I was officially done. I’d been poked and prodded—at Alec’s insistence—by the EMTs, questioned until my throat was raw, and just when I figured I’d be able to jump in my car and go home, Alec “decided” I was too distraught to drive.

Well, fuck that.

“Move, Hot Shot.”

We were locked in a stare down. He was blocking the path to my driver’s side door with his massive body, and I refused to back down, no matter how persuasive he was being.

“Please, baby. Let me drive you home. You’re in no condition—”

“Oh no, youdid not.”

I’d almost caved when he called mebaby, then he kept flapping those gorgeous lips, digging himself a hole big enough for me to bury his tight ass in.

“My condition, as you call it, is almost entirely your fault.”

He flinched. I knew I was being a bitch, but it was almost two in the morning and my bed was calling my name.

“That’s not what I meant and you know it.”

“Ugh,” I sighed. “Compromise?”

“I’m listening.” He smirked.

Arrogant ass.

“You can follow me home.”

He thought about it for a minute, then finally acquiesced with a nod. Stepping to the side, Alec opened the door and waited for me to climb in the seat before leaning into the car.

“If you feel like you can’t make it, pull over immediately.”

“In about two seconds, I’m gonna start the engine. You better get moving if you have plans of keeping up, del Toro.” I winked.

His booming laughter drew the attention of Chief Matthews as he was placing the handcuffed drunk, whose name we found out was Steve, into the back seat of a patrol car.

“Your car’s a piece of shit, Quin. I could probably run beside you.”
