It wasn’t the way I’d planned to tell them they were going to be grandparents, but I was too terrified to care. I needed her to wake the hell up. Having her lifeless body in my arms was fucking with my head. She had to be all right.

“Oh, Allesandro.” Her voice broke a little. “Everything will be just fine, you’ll see. She’s probably a little dehydrated. Has she been sick much?”

“A little.”

“Ambulance is on the way,” Pop said, putting his hand on my shoulder. “Do you want to move her to the living room?”

My parents’ house wasn’t far from town, so within a few minutes you could hear the sirens in the distance. Before I had a chance to answer my father, Quin groaned and began to stir.

“Shh, I’ve got you, baby.” I wrapped my arms loosely around her chest and kissed her temple.

“What happened?”

“You passed out. How are you feeling now?” Ma questioned.

“A little woozy still.”

“Jeez, girl. Way to show everybody up on your first family dinner,” River tried to joke.

“You get a baby announcementandan ambulance,” Emory added. “But don’t ever scare us like that again.”

“Ambulance?” Quin struggled to sit up. “No ambulance. No hospitals.”

“Too late on count one,” Rico fired off as he led the medics through the door.

“I know you don’t have insurance, baby,” I whispered in her ear. “I’ve already talked to my carrier about adding you to my policy and they are looking into it. So if they say you need to go to the hospital, I’m paying and you aren’t arguing. You and the baby’s health are my only concerns. Money is only a piece of paper. You get me?”

I should’ve known better than to think Quin would agree to anything without making me pay for my high-handedness. And I didn’t have to wait long. Her pinch was brutal. Right on the inside of my left thigh, about an inch away from my cock.

“Goddamn.” I winced.

Twack

“Language,Allesandro.”

“Jesus, Ma. You sure you want to smack me in front of witnesses? It’s called abuse.”

“I didn’t see anything,” the male EMT smiled as he placed a blood pressure cuff on Quin’s arm.

“Chickenshit,” I muttered.

The medics worked in tandem, asking questions and doing a thorough assessment, revealing a slightly elevated blood pressure and dehydration. Other than that, Quin was perfectly healthy. Since she already had a doctor’s appointment in a few days, they didn’t think it was necessary for her to go to the hospital. However, if her symptoms continued or worsened in any way, she was to be seen immediately.

“Come, la mia gioia, let’s get you somewhere more comfortable.”

Quin swayed a little once I raised us both to our feet, so I kept my arm wrapped around her waist as we followed Ma toward the living room.

“What’d she call me?”

“Her joy.”

“You seriously told them about the baby while I was unconscious?”

“It just sort of popped out.” I shrugged. “I’m glad to see some color returning to your face, baby. You scared the shit outta me.”

“Sorry.”

“Oh my God. I need to write this down. Quinlan James just apologized for something,” I joked, easing her onto the sofa.
