“I’m perfectly capable of handlingmygirl, Luc.”

“Are there any M&M’s left, Rico? Looks like we might get another show.”

“Ha, ha, asshole.” I rolled my eyes. “Rico, I’ll need you at To A Tea and the hardware store when I’m not there. Knowing Quin, she’ll refuse to take any time off.”

“Figured as much. I’ll bring my laptop and start digging around to see what I can find on her biological dipshits.”

“Perfect. There’s no way I’ll be able to keep Ma and Pop out of this, so Luc?” He stood up straighter. “You’ll be here, at the farm with all of them.”

“Gotcha.”

“Why now, Alec?” Rico posed the question. “They’ve been getting away with blackmail for this long. What’s changed?”

“Quin’s mom met with Caleb this morning. Told him everything, including the role his dad played.”

“Shit,” Luc exclaimed.

“Caleb being who he is, decided to have an unofficial word with them. Obviously”—I waved my hand in the direction of the barn—“his chat didn’t go over well.”

My cell phone dinged in my pocket.

Speak of the devil.

I pulled it out to read the message and my stomach dropped.

Caleb: They weren’t home. I’ve stationed a patrol car down the street but my guess is they’re in the wind.

“Slight change in plans.” I showed them both the text. “First thing in the morning, you two load up all the security cameras we have in stock and get them installed. I want every inch of this farm covered by nightfall.”

These fuckers wielded love like a weapon, using the bond between Quin and her parents against them for years to finance their drug habit. With all the revelations of the past twelve hours, their access to easy money had been obliterated. There was no more ammunition, but instead of rolling over and admitting defeat, they’d lashed out, making them more dangerous than ever before.

After we formulated a plan, my brothers and I went back inside, joining the rest of our group as we promptly devoured the finger foods the women had prepared. The discussion, at first, was light, focusing more on Quin and her pregnancy. However, once Millie excused herself and Charlie to head to bed, the real inquisition began. We spread out in the living room, each couple lounging next to one another, as I gave them a rundown on the latest intel.

“How are you going to protect them?” came from Emory.

“Whose ass do I need to kick?” was River’s contribution.

“Caleb has a ‘be on the lookout’ for Quin’s biological parents—”

“Please don’t call them that,” she interjected. “They arenotparents by any stretch of the imagination.”

“Okay, baby. What would you like me to refer to them as?”

“Bio-assholes.”

Our entire group roared with laughter.

“I like it, but I prefer biological dipshits,” Rico offered.

“DNA douchebags,” Emory snorted.

“Procreating pricks,” River giggled.

“Genetic jackasses,” Luc added.

Smack.

“Jesus, Ma.” He rubbed the back of his head. “Rico said dipshit. Why didn’t you hit him?”
