“I will.”

Quin, who I’d left with strict instructions to stay with the chief of police after she’d been cleared by the EMTs, strutted her fine ass between us. She spun around, hands on her hips and a scowl on her beautiful, yet still too pale, face.

“Baby, what are you doing?” I sighed.

“Keeping you from going all Neanderthal on your brother after he saved my life.”

“She’s got a point there,” Luc chimed in.

I shot him a pointed look.

“He wouldn’t have had to save it if he’d been doing his job.”

“I’m gonna step over there”—Rico pointed to the swarm of police cars blocking the road—“and give my statement to Caleb while you two talk it out.”

To my utter annoyance, she flung her arms around his neck before he could walk away.

“Thank you, Rico.”

“Anytime, sorellinalittle sister.”

The endearment softened my ire slightly as Rico and Luc trudged down the sidewalk, stopping outside of the hardware store where their girls were waiting anxiously. I knew my brothers felt the same way about Quin that I did about River and Emory. They were our family.

“I can’t believe you hit him.”

Ignoring her statement, I pulled her into my arms, kissing her temple. My blood was still boiling, but the feel of her against me, safe and breathing, went a long way to calm the roaring beast battling to break free and go hunting for those motherfuckers.

“How are you feeling?” I asked for the hundredth time since arriving on scene.

“I’m fine.”

“You were bleeding and you passed out.”

“I scraped my hand and I had a panic attack, Hot Shot.”

“One plus one still equals two, baby, no matter which way you try to spin it. There was blood and you were unconscious.”

“Whatever,” she huffed.

“I’d never been more terrified in my life,” I admitted. “Even knowing you were safe, the drive to get to you was a fucking nightmare.”

“Alec,” she said my name on a rough exhale.

“If something had happened to you or the baby, I wouldn’t have survived it.” Drawing back, I looked at my future. “Marry me, Firefly.”

Her eyes widened almost comically.

“What?” she screeched.

“Be my wife.”

“Are you crazy?”

I chuckled. “Crazy about you.”

“You’re insane, you know that?”

“If I’m insane, it’s only because my love for you made me that way.”
