River: I texted Alec first.

Me: Does Rico know you’ve got his brother’s number on speed dial?

River: He gave it to me, now quit stalling and move your ass.

Me: Where exactly are you taking me so freaking early?

River: It’s after 10, lazy bones, and you are in desperate need of a girls’ day.

Me: Is it safe?

River: I’m going to pretend you didn’t just ask me that. The clock is ticking. See you soon.

Dropping the phone to the bed, I scrubbed my hand down my face. Ten o’clock? I hadn’t slept past seven in years. Knowing my time was limited, I scrambled out of bed, grabbed a change of clothes, and rushed through a shower. When I walked out of the steam-filled bathroom fifteen minutes later, wrapped only in a towel, Alec was sitting on the edge of the bed with a sly grin on his face, holding a mug of what smelled like peppermint tea in his outstretched hand.

“Morning, baby.”

“I’m mad at you,” I returned.

“For letting you sleep in?”

“Oh no. I appreciate the extra few hours. You sicced River on me.”

His chuckle turned to a groan when I unceremoniously whipped the towel off my damp body and began drying off.

“That’s cruel and unusual punishment, Firefly. Teasing me when you know full-well there isn’t enough time for me to ravish you.”

“Paybacks are a bitch.” I winked, sliding on a pair of red lace panties.

“Keep sassing, baby.” He rose from the bed, adjusting the bulge in the front of his pants before setting the cup on the dresser by the door. Peering back over his shoulder, his eyes swept over my mostly naked body. “Gives me all sorts of ideas about what to do with your smart mouth.”

After I picked my jaw up off the ground, I finished getting dressed in a pair of dark green capri-style leggings and an oversized light gray T-shirt my dad bought me years ago, which read “Disco Is Life” across the front. The weather in Maryland in mid-July was a coin toss, depending on the level of humidity. It could either be absolutely gorgeous or hotter than Satan’s ass, so my outfit would be perfect for either. Having no idea whether “girls’ day” would be taking place indoors or outside, I slipped on a pair of black thong flip-flops, picked up my phone, gulped down the cup of tea, then headed to the kitchen.

River was either a damn liar or had absolutely no sense of time because she was standing at the counter next to Emory, Luc, and Rico when I walked in. My two best friends wore matching smiles as they rushed across the room to greet me.

“All right, let’s get a move on,” Emory exclaimed.

I looked around the room, noticing for the first time it was completely empty except for the five of us.

“Where is everyone?” I asked.

“Ma and Pop took your parents to have breakfast with the Smiths, and Alec got a call right when we got here. He said to have a great time and to text him every hour.” Luc stepped forward to pull me into a hug.

“Every hour? Seems a bit excessive, don’t you think?”

“After yesterday, I’m shocked he’s letting you out of his sight at all,” Rico spoke up.

“Enough talking. We have an appointment.” River nudged me toward the front door.

“Do I get to know where we’re going now?”

“We have a full spa day planned. First up is a massage,” Ems answered.

I could definitely get on board with an afternoon of being pampered, so without wasting another minute, I followed my girl posse to the black SUV waiting outside. If I’d have known then my whole life was about to be turned on its head, I would’ve run back upstairs and crawled back in bed.
