Dad’s appetite was diminishing. The doctor just wanted him to eat and get in as many calories as possible. His housekeeper’s desserts were the one thing he craved, so she baked for him every day.

And when I was there, I sampled.

I blamed her for all the baby weight I’d gained.

“He’s devouring it,” Rhett said.

“Good,” I replied. The driver took us past the tarmac and onto the road, heading toward the rental. “I’ll give you guys a call in a little bit. Dad, have another slice of pie, if you can.”

“Gooo,” Rhett replied. “I’ve got him. Stop worrying.”

I smiled. “Love you guys.”

“Love you,” they said in unison, and I hung up.

“Everything all right over there?” Cooper asked, moving closer to put his arm around me.

“As well as they can be, I suppose.” I set my phone on my lap, but as it vibrated, I lifted it to check the screen. “Even his voice is becoming weaker. What if he’s not?—”

“Don’t.” He pressed his lips to my temple. “I know what you’re going to say, and that’s not going to happen. He’s fighting like hell to be here for when our baby is born. You see that every time you go over there. Focus on that, Rowan. The moment we get to set our little girl in his arms—that’s what I want you thinking about.”

I nodded.

Because if I said anything, the tears would come, and I didn’t want to cry.

I’d done so much of that lately.

“What does Sky want?” he asked, his lips no longer on my temple, his head nodding toward my phone.

I’d forgotten that it had vibrated and that was the reason I was holding it.

Peonies or lilies?

Me

You mean, in general or …

Sky

Your mom and I are in a full debate over the centerpieces for the baby shower. So, peonies or lilies?

Me

Peonies.

Sky

I’m always right. Don’t worry, I won’t say that to your mom. LOL.

I want you to know, I’ve been trying to get my niece’s name out of her. She’s either the best liar ever or she really doesn’t know it.

Me

Girl, if Mom knew the name, so would you.
