I reached the door to the SUV and said, “I know it’s going to kill you to admit it’s what you want. Don’t worry, I won’t make you. I’ll just wait until we meet with our architect and contractor and it’s three against one.”

“Jesus Christ.”

I climbed into the backseat, moving all the way in so he could get in behind me.

“Back to the hotel,” Cooper growled to the driver the moment the door was shut.

He took out his phone, and although I couldn’t see the screen from here, the movement of his thumbs told me he was attempting to keep himself busy.

“I think we need to?—”

He cut me off with, “Tomorrow.”

Tomorrow?

“Excuse me?” I asked.

“Tomorrow, you can chirp all you want. But right fucking now, I need silence and a cocktail.”

My hands froze on the keyboard of my laptop as my stare darted toward the door of my hotel room.

What is that sound?

The noise was a creak in the floor, like a person was standing over a particular spot, shifting their weight back and forth so the ground beneath gave off a light squeak in both directions. A sound just loud enough to come through my door and causeme to stare at the wooden barrier that blocked me from seeing whoever was on the other side.

I heard it again.

And again.

Even my door was making a noise, almost like there was pressure being forced against it.

I set my laptop beside me and silently got out of bed, tiptoeing to the door until I was close enough that I could align my eye with the peephole.

I saw nothing.

Not even a flash of clothing from someone running away or the door on the other side of the hallway closing. All I saw was the carpet, wallpaper, and the sconces that hung on the opposite wall.

Assuming I was just overtired and on edge, I walked back to my bed. Instead of grabbing my laptop, I lifted my phone off the nightstand and typed out a message to Sky.

Me

I swear someone was just outside my room, and when I checked, no one was there. Why am I hearing things? WTF is wrong with me?

Sky

It’s Cooper. He’s making you wild.

Me

Ugh.

Sky

And you’re sex-deprived. All you want to do is jump his bones, and the asshole is making it painful to even be around him.

Me

You’re right.
