„You lovely girls,” I whisper. „You deserve a home, don’t you? And a loving family to dote over you, and—”

I freeze when I see someone at the gate, about to enter the yard of the cat rescue.

No fucking way.

I must be having hallucinations because what I’m seeing can’t be right. It’s just my disappointed mind playing tricks on me, that damn need inside of me, that was so close to being fulfilled, before…

Because there is no fucking way that my professor, the man of my dreams, the man who has been at the center stage of all my sexual fantasies lately, has just walked through the gate with a cat carrier in his hand.

He looks absolutely stunning, like always, dressed in a casual winter coat and dark denim, his hair ruffled and not gelled into place today. He’s followed by another man in a dark suit and sunglasses, who’s carrying another cat carrier himself. Is that his bodyguard? Why would he have a bodyguard?

He doesn’t seem to notice me, and just walks straight toward the main building of the premises, while I slowly get back up on my feet, staring at him with an open mouth.

What is he doing here? And what is in those carriers? Is he trying to get rid of his cats?

Intrigued, I can’t stop myself from moving toward the building he just entered. I’m walking slowly, followed by the tabby cats, who probably think that I might be getting some snacks for them.

I wait at the open door, hiding around the corner as I try to listen to the conversation inside. But all I hear is muffled voices, unintelligible and frustrating.

So, I dare to reveal myself and follow him inside. He’s standing with his back to me, his bodyguard guy right next to him, while the carriers rest on the counter of the makeshift reception.

Paula is standing behind the counter, and when she sees me, she nods in my direction, which causes both men to turn around.

„Hi,” I say, standing awkwardly in the middle of the open door, as I give them a little wave with my hand.

Professor Jones’s face derails for a split second, before he gets a hold of himself, and opts for a friendly but distant „Hello”.

Okay, I guess this is going to be a we-have-never-met-before-performance.

A moment of tense silence follows, his eyes locked on me, while his bodyguard guy loses interest in me rather quickly, and Paula appears confused.

„I’m sorry, but I’m afraid we can’t help you,” she says eventually, and Professor Jones turns around to look at her.

„What do you mean?” he asks sternly, followed by a meow coming from one of the boxes.

„We don’t have the capacity to take on any more cats, let alone a whole litter—”

„A whole litter?” I burst out, before I come closer to have a look at the cat carriers he brought.

I bend down to look inside and find three pairs of eyes looking back at me. Three little kittens, one with black fur and the other two with gray fur—and one of them has the most striking green eyes I’ve ever seen.

„Oh my God!” I squeal, and I hear Paula sighing.

„I know, aren’t they beautiful?” she says. „One of them looks like a Russian Blue! They are so pretty.”

„And expensive.” I sigh in adoration as I investigate the other carrier, which appears to contain the mother of the kittens. Her fur is gray as well, but a bit darker than that of two of her kittens. She looks at me through large, golden eyes, obviously confused and afraid, but with the most beautiful little girl-cat face I’ve ever seen.

„Oh my God, she’s so pretty.”

„I know, right?” Paula chimes in. „I mean, they’re not purebreds obviously, but there’s definitely some Russian Blue blood in them somewhere.”

„That one kitten looks pretty close to it,” I agree, going back to the other carrier.

Professor Jones clears his throat, and I’m instantly thrown back into reality. A reality that still confuses the hell out of me. I straighten my back and look at him.

„Why do you want to get rid of them?” I ask with a frown on my face. If he’s trying to get rid of his cat after she had babies, he may not be that dreamy after all.

„I’m…I’m not, they’re not mine,” he argues. „I found them last night, outside my house. Someone left them there, in a cardboard box. I couldn’t leave them out there, could I?”
