His dirty talk made this feel naughty instead of degrading. She eased her hand beneath her and found her clit. Her pussy was soaking wet and she couldn’t resist shoving her fingers inside her aching core.

“I told you to rub your clit, not finger your pussy.”

“Sorry, Sir. I’m justsowet.”

He rocked back onto his knees, pulling her up with him. Then he reached around her hip and covered her hand. His long fingers slid into her pussy right alongside her own. Together they fucked her pussy while his cock continued to fill her ass. He put pressure on her hand, rubbing her clit in the process. She threw back her head and cried out as her orgasm detonated. Her pussy clenched and released around their fingers, tightening her back passage around his cock. Pleasure ripped through her body with staggering intensity, making her shake and moan. She heard him growl and felt the warmth of his cum jetting deep inside her. The sensations went on and on, pulsing through her in tingling waves.

“That was fucking hot,” she murmured as she collapsed onto her belly, inadvertently disentangling their bodies. “Is it always like that?” When he didn’t respond, she looked back at him. Kern looked just as stunned as she felt.

He crawled up the bed and lay down beside her. “The rebels can teach you how to control your power but this was a stopgap. It will happen again and again. The only way to stabilize your power permanently is to bond with your mates.”

She nodded, but didn’t want to think about her mates while lying naked with Kern. She folded her arms and rested the side of her face on her hands, needing to see him. They weren’t lovers, not really. But she didn’t want to be alone. Her emotions were still too raw for isolation.

He pushed up onto his elbow and lightly touched her arm, compassion gentling his expression. “Are you all right? I didn’t hurt you too badly, did I?”

His compassion was unexpected. Welcome, but surprising. “I’m fine,” she said, lowering her gaze to his throat. “It needed to be done and you were less horrible than most.”

He chuckled. “High praise indeed.”

She dragged her gaze back to his face, struck again by his sinister beauty. “Don’t be insulted. I told you I was crushing on someone else.” More of her body was hidden as she lay on her belly, so she resisted the urge to roll to her side and wiggle closer to him.

“Yes, you did. What is your bodyguard’s name?”

A slow, rolling flush washed over her entire body. The room undulated, swelling in and out of focus for a moment before it refocused with hyper clarity. “I feel really strange. Is that normal for post-activation?”

“That depends. What do you mean by strange?”

“Hot. Not like before, more like an old-fashioned fever.”

He reached over and felt her forehead. “You are warm, but not feverish.”

She nodded. “I guess I’m just coming down from the endorphin high.”

A pleased smile curved his lips, softening his angular features. “Rest for a bit, then I’ll show you how to operate the sonic shower. If you still feel odd after that, I will run some medical scans.”

“All right. And his name is Cylex.”

Kern’s brows drew together and disapproval flashed in his silvery blue eyes. “Your bodyguard’s name is Cylex?”

“Why did you ask? Do you know anyone at the Citadel named Cy…” Raina’s body went limp and darkness swallowed reality.

Cylex settled in behind the master control panel of the sleek Altorian fighter. He had flown various ships manufactured all over the star system but never anything this new or nice. It humbled him that Zevon trusted him with such a valuable piece of equipment. He had just taken the ship into hyperspace and he’d triple checked their destination, so his mind drifted onto the challenges awaiting them once they reached Torret.

From his best estimation, they were about six hours behind Kern and Raina. He had no way of knowing what sort of ship Kern was flying but it stood to reason that it was similar to this ship. Something of moderate size that was fast and maneuverable. If Kern had braved hyperspace in a shuttle, they would likely overtake him before they reached Torret. That was the best-case scenario. It was also the least likely.

Tension banded Cylex’s chest as he thought of Raina alone with Kern. There was a darkness in Kern that came out whenever he had a female at his mercy. It hadn’t always been that way. They had met at the Seyzon Academy when they were fifteen. They were both hybrids, both tolerated yet never accepted by the people surrounding them. The similarities drew them together and forged a friendship that lasted during their stay at the prestigious boarding school. Shortly after graduation, however, Kern broke off all contact with Cylex. They had encountered each other numerous times in the ensuing years, but Kern seemed like a very different person. Cylex tried repeatedly to find out what had happened after graduation but Kern refused to talk about whatever had brought about the changes.

Kern became cold, emotionless, and cruel. Cylex had tried everything he knew to reach out to his friend, but Kern pushed him away at every turn. Then Kern announced that he had been reassigned to a distant outpost. He would not name the outpost or explain his purpose for going there. Cylex did not see him again for almost a decade, and by then they were veritable strangers.

And now that ruthless stranger had Raina. Cylex shuddered, stubbornly snuffing out the images hovering on the peripheries of his consciousness. Dwelling on the possibilities would not allow him to rescue her any faster. And getting her away from Jevara and Kern was his top priority. Ensuring that she was never endangered again was a close second.

Laidon moved to the front of the ship and looked at Telias, the navigator, expectantly. “Do you mind if I have a word with the commander?”

“Go ahead. Things will be quiet for a while.” Telias stood and headed aft, sitting down in the seat Laidon had just vacated.

Wanting to keep the mission fast and focused, Cylex had selected an eight-person team. He didn’t like Laidon, but the rebel possessed knowledge that was crucial to the mission, and connections that might come in handy if things went sideways. “What do you need?” Cylex asked, unable to keep the dislike out of his tone.
