Zevon pressed back into his seat and crossed his arms over his chest. “I’m not so sure. That female is incredibly stubborn and set in her ways.”

“What happens if she refuses?” Jobek asked as he pushed back from the table.

“We’ll have to intercept his transport before he reaches Torret,” Zevon stated. “But I’d much rather do it without tipping our hand to Jevara.” Zevon stood up, making it obvious that the meeting was over.

The others followed his lead.

“Your triad performed incredibly well,” Zevon said as they neared the door. “Not everyone can take on wraiths and live to tell the tale.”

“I thought two weeks of training had accomplished a lot more than it had,” Ansley admitted. “We got lucky.”

“We did accomplish a lot,” Tandor objected. “Two weeks is not a lot of time.”

Ansley shook her head, needing her mates to understand. “That’s my point. I was overconfident. We need to continue to work hard and learn from the mentors here at the Citadel. We have a lot more to learn before we’re ready for a real battle.”

“I’ll give you as much time as I can,” Zevon promised. “But war is coming. It has been brewing for years. I’ll do everything I can to minimize the danger, but I’ll need every triad I can get.”

She nodded and then followed her mates from the room. “Mistress Air is amazing. Her power is tangible even when she’s just sitting there.”

“I happen to think that you are pretty amazing too,” Jobek told her. “I don’t understand why you’re upset by the outcome of our mission. We met every objective.”

“It was my attitude that failed,” Ansley insisted. “My first taste of power went right to my head. I thought I could manage my ego better than I did.”

“Well, it sounds like you need a sound spanking and an evening spent on your knees to reestablish your humility,” Tandor told her.

Jobek laughed as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders. “You’re stealing my best lines.”

Tandor wrapped his arm around her waist and gave her a firm squeeze. “I love you, mate.”

“There you go again,” Jobek objected. He leaned down and kissed her temple. “I adore you, mate, and after we’ve warmed your adorable ass, we’re going to spend the rest of the night showing you how special you are.”

Emotions tightened Ansley’s throat, making words impossible. Instead, she reached for the soul bond and poured love and happiness into their minds.

The End
