Laidon raised his weapon and pointed it at his lieutenant. “Bring me the girl or get the fuck out.”

Neloff reached Eden and Kyrex. His features were tense, eyes slightly unfocused, but he clearly understood what needed to be done. He silently moved in close to Eden’s left side and wrapped his arm around her back. Kyrex pressed in on her right and the triad activated. Neloff inundated her being with mystic energy, strengthening her body, increasing her focus, yet making her hyperaware.

Take him out, Kyrex urged. We cannot wait around to see how this power struggle concludes.

She carefully lowered her shields and Neloff poured raw energy into her mind. Kyrex expanded his shields, protecting both of his bond mates. Eden focused on Laidon’s back. She wasn’t sure why she cared, but she didn’t want to burn Laidon to a cinder. Forming the energy into a narrow stream, she propelled it through the crowd. A couple of the rebels gasped and jumped back as the crackling flow passed by them. The electric current hit Laidon squarely between the shoulder blades. He cried out and convulsed violently, then dropped to the floor. His gun fell out of his hand and Soro kicked it aside.

“Everyone, stand down!” Soro shouted. “This isnotgoing to happen. Milet, that means you too.”

“But she’s right there.” Milet lowered his weapon, but still held it firmly in hand. “There’s only two of them. We can take her.”

Eden watched him closely. His eyes were wild, as if he were still conflicted about what he should do. Proving her instincts right, he suddenly lunged, rushing forward, gun pointed at the center of Kyrex’s chest.

Reacting without thinking, she blasted him with freezing water, easily knocking him off his feet. He hit the floor so hard that his gun went flying and his eyes rolled back in his head.

“We can do this all night,” Kyrex warned. “Anyone else want to threaten our mate?”

The entire line of rebels behind Milet placed their weapons on the floor and moved backward several steps.

Eden turned to face the other groups of rebels. They followed the example of their companions and placed their weapons on the floor.

“Our only hope of taking out Jevara, not to mention accessing conduits, is if we agree to this alliance,” Soro insisted. “If Laidon can’t see that, he’s a fool.”

“Laidon hasn’t been able to see a lot of things lately,” a burly blond on Eden’s left grumbled. “His obsession with conduits makes no sense. It never did.”

Soro seemed to have the conflict under control, so Eden reached up and stroked Neloff’s face. Are you alright?

Laidon diverted my attention and smacked me with something really hard, Neloff explained with a rueful smile.

She examined the back of his head and found a considerable lump, but no blood.

He pulled her hand away from his skull and kissed her knuckles.I should have realized he wasn’t serious. I’m usually better at reading people than that.

We’ve both been a bit distracted lately.Kyrex winked at Eden then refocused on the crowd.

“Most of us don’t give a shit about conduits,” someone near the blond called out. “Only a few of us were born with abilities.”

“This is supposed to be about getting rid of Jevara and creating a better life for everyone,” the blond said with more conviction.

Milet groaned and struggled to sit up. A couple of the rebels rushed over and helped him to his feet. He glared at Eden, but allowed his friends to guide/carry him over to one side of the corridor.

“The terms of the alliance are good,” Soro stressed. “I think we need to accept it.”

“It’s not your decision,” Milet snapped. “Laidon is still our leader. I don’t take orders from you.”

“Is the alliance still an option?” The blond looked at the triad. “Thanks to Laidon’s orders, we just attacked Zevon’s ambassadors.”

“There is no alliance as long as Laidon is your leader,” Kyrex said firmly.

“I nominate Soro as our new leader,” the blond called out. “Laidon’s decisions have led to bloodshed and confusion. This change has been coming for a while now.”

“You disloyal fuck,” Milet sneered as he swung around and faced Soro. “Are you going to allow this? Laidon is your best friend.”

“Laidon hasn’t been the same since he returned and you know it,” Soro defended. “Am I supposed to pretend that nothing is wrong? His obsession with conduits is putting us at odds with everyone.”

“He founded this movement,” Milet persisted, looking dejected as well as angry. “You’re all a bunch of disloyal shits.” Shoving his way through the crowd, Milet departed. Several of the rebels went with him.

“Let’s vote with a show of hands,” the blond persisted despite the opposition.
